Hey guys, beginner here, just starting to spar and looking for some advice.

My questin is, as generally a taller/rangier guy, what or when are the opportunities for landing the uppercut as a counter going to arise?

I'm looking for common situations both as a pure counter as well as easy/common setups for the uppercut.

Like I said I'm generally a long guy and have mostly been working with the 1 and the 1-2, but feel like I see openings where the UC fits well.

Any technique videos you guys recommend as really teaching perfect uppercut form and boxers/footage to watch would also be much appreciated.

Thanks

When you feel the need to fill the room with them.

A counter that works for me is to wait for his right jab and slip it to the right, then shot your right uppercut

When he ducks the 1 or 2 make him duck into an uppercut.

My advice on this would work if you are sparring with slightly smaller guys.

I tend to use my range, 1s and 2s, long hooks. Effective use of the range should encourage your opponent to want to get inside the range.

Look to see how they try to close in, if they try to roll and come through, use your uppercut, set it up with a hook to raise their hands.

If someone comes in firing, slipping and throwing shots its really about timing on the shot, you could take a half step back, cut the angle or simply switch stance to regain the reach, avoid the punch and then throw the uppercut.

These are just some things that work for me.

It's a classic but easy to practice- block a body hook with your arm and then immediately fire the uppercut with the arm that blocked the punch. Same side return.

You can drill the hell out of this with a semi competent mitt holder

assuming orthodox vs orthodox, try slipping his jab to the outside and banging a right uppercut as counter.

although im not so sure that's a good idea as a taller opponent as I'm not usally a taller opponent. seems you'd be in a better position to just bang a right cross over his jab instead of going under it with an uppercut.
