When Joe Riggs-Matt Hughes fight was announced...

Quarry was fighting Franklin on the same card...

They brought in Sinosic to lose to Forrest Griffin in the previous event (which was headlined by Arlovski vs. Buentello) Mis-matches were normal back then, the top talent was mostly in Pride.

I thought they should've given Diaz the shot, but UFC kind of hated him back then. They were always telling him off for being too thuggish... but tbf he did lose to Riggs.

Yea the quarry fight never made sense. Was the crow injured at the time? He was the only logical opponent back then, yet quarry came out of no where

Hughes was significantly better but when the fight was announced there was a sense of Joe might actually be too strong for a guy who relied on his “retard strength” and “country breakfast xyeince bars” on this forum

Didn't Rigg squeal like a pig when Hughes locked in that Kimura?

Would've loved to seen him train in his prime. Huge Karo fan!!!!
Trained with him at Gokors in North Hollywood (where he really made his start) then at Legends MMA (gym owned by Bas and Randy before Xtreme Couture) we were super close for years he’s an incredible talent the gym battles at Legends were well Legendary, we had everyone from Rampage/Mayhem/Randy/Bas/Rob Kaman/Jeremy Williams/ etc etc etc (we were also home to Eddie Bravo and 10th planet before he ventured out on his own) those years were filled with great memories. Love all those guys.

Thats my point. You can name plenty of them and is highly subjective who would deserve to be in a top10 of such category.

Actually its pretty debatable that Horn was a "journeyman" for example, even disrespectful. He was a legit contender for a while or at the very least an elite gatekeeper for a very long time. He used to outclasss and finish what I consider journeymen.
There's clear criteria for what constitutes as a journeyman. To Horns defence, they typically don't fight for titles but title shots in mma are a lot more achievable than boxing where a extensive case needs to built. He had two shots in the somewhat early days of the sport and spent most of his career fighting in small to medium sized promotions.

Horn could compete and hang with the best of them but he ultimately fell short when it mattered. He never won a major title and fought extensively and in a range of promotions. Nothing disrespectful about being a labelled a journeyman, I have more respect for guys like Horn and Riggs than most of the contenders of today who sit and bitch on the sidelines waiting for the perfect opponent, the perfect title shot and the perfect purse.

Hey BEATDOWNS……Hey
It’s me - Brian!
Damn, your username & avatar gave me some flashback to my middle school years... one of my friends had a deck combo based on this card, and it was such a bitch to beat him with my usual decks.

About Hughes, well my first Sherdog account was in 2004 or 2005 (and I can prove it!) but at the time I was mostly a PRIDE head.
UFC was like Bellator right now, a good org with some good fights, but all the top dogs were in PRIDE.

Plus, the lack of soccer kicks, stomps and knees to the head on the ground really hurt the UFC back then...
Anyway, when I really got in the UFC, Matt Hughes was the man, but there was this consensus that he fought GSP as exactly the right time, and that a couple years later Georges would rush past him.

A little bit like when Big Nog got that decision against Sergei in PRIDE, it wasn't controversial (Rodrigo showed some nice crisp boxing that night, and his usual toughness and experience) but the consensus was that Rodrigo fought him just at the right time, and a rematch a couple years later would be very different...
(sadly Sergei's career got a tad derailed, and he didn't turn out to be a GSP type champion, but the comparison still works; I guess Werdum vs Big Nog 1 would be a better example, another close fight that Nog won thanks to experience and toughness)

Anyway, when Hughes vs GSP 2 was about to happen, which would have been one of my first live UFC events, since once again I was more of a PRIDE nuthugger
(since I was also a K-1 head, and that there were lots of cross-promotions and K1 guys trying their luck in PRIDE and vice versa, it was more convenient)
I decided to get into the UFC spirit and learn as much as I could before the show started.

I was curious as to why almost everyone was expecting St-Pierre to run through Country Breakfast.
(I mean, GSP wasn't the betting favorite, the odds were almost even, but he was the fan favorite to win the rematch in impressive fashion)

"Matt won their first fight right?
And look at his record, dude is on fire right now, he made Royce look like a joke, and he just smoked BJ Penn and all"

(back in those days it wasn't as easy as now to watch a fighter's entire career, so the only GSP bouts I had the occasion to watch were against Mayhem Miller, Sean Sherk, and the first Hughes fight)

Anyway, my brothers and my wrestling buddies were just telling me to watch and learn, St-Pierre is a monster and will dominate the division for a long time.
And holy shit, did I watch and learn!

That was the night Georges became my favorite "UFC guy", and my newly found faith didn't falter when Serra KO'd him right after.
It was inspiring watching him come back from that, outwrestling the ace Josh Koscheck (without any formal wrestling background) and putting the last nail in the coffin of his rivalry with former idol Matt Hughes

Anyway, gotta love Joe Riggs, I know lots of folks make fun of his tattoos, but I loved the color so much that my first 3 tattoos were all green with black outline, like Diesel's =>

That way, even if my tattoos have nothing in common meaning-wise, there is still a look of belonging together to them, if it makes sense?

I hold this event close to my heart because UFC 56 was the first even that made me want to follow this sport and yet I have few questions for you guys. So the fight was suppose to be Matt Hughes vs Karo Parisyan and Karo hurt his hamstring and pulled out.

So then Joe took the fight and there was some controversy with the weight issue, it seemed that he made weight but officials fucked up and by the time they fixed the scale, Riggs rehydrated and so because of the mistake, Dana didn't give him shit for not making weight.

Now here are my questions:

When it was announced Riggs was fighting Hughes, what was the general reaction on this forum?

Did you guys think Riggs had a chance or was a dangerous opponent to Hughes?

What did you think of Riggs vs Hughes fight?

Had Riggs trained fully for the fight, could he have beaten Hughes?
i think you left out the part where this fight being scheduled started a permanent rift btwn the gym and Joe. I think Riggs got shafted bc Hughes was their golden boy
