What's your opinion on French as a language?

It's hard to learn.

I failed french class two years in a row in HS then switched to spanish and got Bs.

Beautiful and expressive, it's regretfully the one Romance language I can't speak or understand.

Just another language for me. My dad's side of the family are French Canadian, and I took 9-10 years of French immersion school. Took two French classes in high school which were basically entry level shit that 8 year olds learn. Those were some easy credits, and basically a class I could just fuck around in and do nothing.

It's not something I've ever really used in my daily life other than in school which was years ago so eventually you start forgetting stuff, like I'd have a hard time having a conversation with someone in French anymore but I can still fully understand when I hear, listen, or read it.

Useful for surprising the locals when you're on holiday, and for impressing the sort of pretty nice-assed airhead that's impressed by that sort of thing. Otherwise, a bit of a waste of time, although I may one day decide to retire there.

Was never a big fan of french even tho ITA closer to portugueses than english is

I use to dislike the language. Thought it was rough on the ears.

As I've gotten older I've grown to love it.

I dislike language where the nouns are either masculine or feminine. How do you keep track of that "le, la, les" shit?

With that said, I took two semesters of French in university. I can do simple greetings and phrases, but not enough to carry a regular conversation.

the quebecois accent on a girl is sexy as hell. i understand why the people in quebec work as hard as they do to enforce it. with so many non-french speakers surrounding them, they can easily lose the language to outside influences.

For years and years I thought bonjour meant goodbye. Feel like an asshole

Its a great language to sound snooty with.

I have relatives in France, and they call Quebec French the hillbilly French.

It's a great language. Chicks dig it. I just use this line all the time:

Je suis un bon vivant a qui experimente un menage a trois. Avez-vous?

haha, i'm not surprised. it's the same way the spanish people in spain think of spanish from outside spain.

Yep we speak Hillbilly French and piss on everyone's opinion. The Fench from France can gtfo.

Our language laws may seem absurd to outsiders but unfortunately that's all we can do to keep what is left of our culture.

BTW older people from many regions in western France have a way of speaking that is reminiscent of Quebecois French, but it has been weeded out.

France is culturally EXTREMELY Paris - centric and regional dialects can be seen as lower class by the parisian elite.

On the other hand, French provincials usually love Quebec and its people. They see us like the retarded cousin, but part of the family.

I absolutely love France, many of my best friends are French, my fiancée is French, but I have absolutely no problem telling the French to go fuck their mothers when they cross the line.

People here are obsessed with it. We have languages law, you have to make your billboards with the french language bigger than the English. Radios have quotas of French songs. People still write like shit, the level of language here is very poor.

Still, I just wanted the opinions of some non-native speakers, what do you think about when you think about French language ?
Good. They should protect their language and culture. Germany does something similar as well.

So, as a "french french" I would say :

- about the whispering stuff, well that's all subjective, americans are globally viewed as obnoxiously loud here

- about the global "complaining attitude", well can't denie that, we even openly admit it oursleves, french like to grumble.
As Cocteau said : "french are italians in a bad mood." :D

- about the language itself, what I like about the writing aspect of it is his in depth complexity that allows for far more finesse and subtilities than others, of course at the cost of easy access to it.
As for the musicality of it I largely prefer spanish / italian.

It's a good idea to be bilingual. If you can learn french, Italian and Spanish are not hard. Mandarin Chinese is hard. Hungarian is another difficult language to learn.

hmmm, I've never really taken the time to form an opinion on the French language. or any language for that matter.

also, there's too many silent letters imo.
