What's Your Next Purchase? V5

That particular S&B is 100% made for hunting, definitely not a tactical scope. There is only a cross hair and illuminated dot. It also has other fancy features but anyway.

Dvor also has these, admittedly more tactical scopes but it might fill the role for you and maybe more if you wanted.

G2B mildot

Again take another 10% off with the code.

Would probably make a pretty sweet sheep hunting scope (depending on weight). Also would make a good elk scope for places
Like NM, AZ, where you end up shooting acrosss burn areas and valleys either early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

For right now, it's a bit overkill for me, I'll probably just get a leupold vx3 or something.

Vortex Viper. Any of the sub models would be great I bet.

Shit, I need a scope for the .22lr bolt-action recently acquired. What's cheap, good, appropriate for target shooting out to 100 yards on something like that?

You looking for a fixed, 2-7, 3-9, 4-12?

Maybe try looking for .22lr bdc scopes, I think some of the best out there are Pride Fowler Industries(PFI). Possibly more than you'd like to spend 3-400.

Nikon has some .22 bdc for 1-200.

No clue. lol.

What do distinguished gentlemen usually settle on?

Whatever they want I suppose, not sure.

Depends on the purpose I assume. Does weight/size concern you? Want a high magnification?

2-7
Fixed 4
3-9
4-12

Are probably your most standard sizes.

I guess the purpose would be 100-yard accuracy. Weight should be minimal. Magnification is something I always want more of. 3-9 or 4-12 are probably the way to go. Would love to get something that does the job nicely for under $200.

Leupold makes some nice rimfire scopes in the 200 dollar range. That's what I've been running and I've been happy with it.

Thanks man. Any particular insight into the pros and cons of various levels of magnification?

Well I had the fixed 4 power but I found it a bit too much for shooting birds out of trees from like 30-100 feet away so switched to the 2-7 model and I find it much more useful bur I like the simplicity of fixed power scopes.

I have the 2-7 mounted on a basic CZ 455 American and now the 4 power is sitting on a ruger 77/22.

There's grouse and ptarmigans here that you can just pop with a 22 and cook for dinner so having a solid 22 setup is a necessity.

In regards to the simplicity of fixed, what's so hard about leaving it on x-setting and calling it fixed? 7x magnification you figure is good out to 100 yards and you like the 2x for the shorter distances that game may reside?

You are absolutely right, no problem leaving it at 2x, I just like the idea of fewer. Icing parts. Shit breaking out here is really lame.

I'd say 7x is definetly good for 100 yards while 2x is good for close up shots. The 4x wasn't really too much magnification, it just sometimes made it harder to find things while looking through it if that makes sense.

Sort of like the Bigfoot story I told in the Mayberry like a year ago (probably a black bear not a Bigfoot) I had a fixed 8x scope and whatever was fucking with me was like 30 feet away, so I wouldn't even be able to line up a solid shot.

lol at icing parts. I'm sorry for you poor decision making. :p

Great foo for thought and thanks for the recommendation. I'm sold on the 2-7. That's a huge help right there.

Should have said "moving parts" lol.

I really like leupold stuff, I used to not be a huge fan but I've really warmed up to it over the past year or 2.

Just ordered a 6.5 Grendel Type II barrel, 7.62x39 side charging upper and barrel . . . mwahahahaha.

BCA's side charging uppers are on sale this week if you were waiting on a decent price.

I need a scope for a 30-06.

Thinking about a zeiss conquest or a Swarovski z3.

Like a 2-10x42 type thing.

I just bought a couple of Vortex Crossfire II's a week or so ago . . . $99 each.

It'll probably be Black Friday before I get motivated on this purchase, but now at least I've got some idea of what I'm looking for. Growing up I always shot the ol' 10/22 with nothing but the irons.

Same here, just irons for a long time.

It's pretty hard to beat Vortex's dollar to quality ratio. I've got a 1-6x strike eagle on my AR and outside of a small ring of distortion around the edge at 1 power it is a clear and reliable optic. My only gripe with it is the adjustments are .5 MOA. Also there is no off toggle between each illumination setting on the red dot. I think the vipers fix that problem.

Edit: another gripe I have with the strike eagle is they are made in China, I think they're the only Vortex optic made in China though.
