What's Your Next Purchase? V5

454 Casull, can anyone speak to their experience with this caliber?

No, however I would recommend a .460 S&W as it can shoot .460, .454 Casull, .45lc and .45 Schofield.

SO, in the continuing saga of me being wishy washy as fuck.

IF I ordered the Weatherby Vanguard with Leupold in 30.06 through GalleryOfGuns... 849 charged to me supposedly. 262.25 deposit at Gallery and 680.51 due at pickup.

I want to jump now but can't afford it. BBBBOOO, plus according to the website they only have one in stock. Fuck.

Sure. I've got a few revolvers chambered in it, I've shot it but not hunted with it. 454 revolvers can also shoot 45lc. It's a pretty awesome caliber.

I have a ruger Alaskan and a super Blackhawk in 454. The black hawk has been to Bowen custom for work and I havnt handled it since it came back.

850 is a great deal for that set up. Those are such good rifles. Let us know how you like it.

Hopefully when I have the cash for it it will still be available. I'm waiting on my damn tax return still. Asked for a papercheck. Never going that route again.

All the talk about vanguards got me looking at gunbroker. I found a vanguard dangerous game rifle in 375hh.

That's one caliber I don't have that I'd really like to get. The rifle is about 1k which is half the price of a Sako kodiak or a kimber talkeetna.

It's got a tan fiber glass stock and open sights, I'm really thinking of getting it, but I'll need to sell something just to make room in the safe. I'm really on the edge with this one, I've been wanting a new protection rifle for a long time and this could be it.

Sux when you can't just scoop up the deal you like.

@ironwolf let us know what you're going to sell. ;)

Yeah, only thing I can think of right now is a Remington 700 tactical that I dropped into a nice hs precision stock and installed badger bottom metal, and seekins base/rings with a vortex pst on it. Oh, it's a 308:

I just don't really use it and also don't really do that sort of shooting very often.

The only issue is that anytime I try to sell anything my dad usually wants it so I just give it to him.

I really want a 375hh, seems like an awesome caliber for hunting moose in bear country. I was considering a ruger guide gun in 338wm but this weatherby is almaot exactly the same price.

I just wish ruger would get their shit together and make some guns in 375hh rather than 375ruger, I hear 375ruger is a great cartridge, I just have no interest in it.

Last time I was in fairbanks to hunt, there was tons of 375hh, 338wm, 300wm, 30-06, 270, 45-70, 22lr, 44mag, 45lc, 454casull.

....no 375 ruger. My buddy was hunting with a 375ruger and only had 10 rounds of ammo because he just figured he'd buy some when we got there. By the time his rifle was sighted in to where he was happy, he had 2 bullets left lol.

I like your dad's style. :)

Fairbanks was my first year of college.

You lived there? I'm hoping to move there in the next few years.

Well, for a school year I did. No clue why you'd aspire to subject yourself to -40 degree weather but have at it, sucka. Me, I was ducking the service (sorta).

On the plus side I'd say the Northern Lights is one of the more awesome sights in nature.

I bought a chunk of land around there so it will be an awesome base for my hunting, fishing, cabin building plan.

I'm actually planning on taking a huge downgrade in my job to live there and I'm really excited about it actually. I've always loved hunting up that way.

Check impact guns and gunbroker, they are around. Or maybe just buy the rifle and set it up with what you want if you can't find one when you're ready to buy.

Part of the other thing admittedly is I am still stuck living at home with the folks until later July. My dad wouldn't care about me getting another gun because to him it would be "He can spend it on what he wants". My mom would be the one doing the "you're wasting your money" shtick.

I could just get one of the base guns then buy a scope and the rings and stuff but the Leupold package they have MSRP's around $1100 according to their website ('their' being Weatherby). That Leupold scope on it is like $350-400 so if I wanted to buy just the naked gun that's $600-$700 and then I'd also have to get the rings and do the mounting myself. Which at the end would cost more than that package deal.

Yeah for sure, those packages like that can be a really good deal. Not the Remington 700 ones where you get the rifle and shitty scope for 500 bucks (although one of those in 270
Was my only hunting rifle for like 10 years).

I think last year, weatherby had a vortex package, apparently they always switch around, I was on Rugers website and looking at the "American" and they have a vortex package, last year it was a red field package.

All this weatherby talk has me shopping again and I was thinking about it today, if I were picking just one rifle to take with me for a few months in my cabin, it would probably be a vanguard 30-06.

I'm thinking very seriously about buying the vanguard "dangerous game" rifle in 375hh...I'm so damn close. I was even pricing out suitable scopes, looking for something more low powered and weaver, leupold and Nikon make good ones. It is probably go with the leupold which would add 500 dollars to the cost...then I'd need a sling and probably ~ at least 500 rounds of ammo to get it sighted in, get used to it and then have a cache of ammo for it....BUT even with that....all set up would still be under the base cost of some other 375hh rifles.

It's hard to find exactly what I want in 375hh. The CZs are cool but I'm going to be using this in wet areas with bad weather and probably carrying it AND another rifle at times. The Sako looks cool but I'm not into detachable mags on hunting rifles (murph us law) and the kimber one looks awesome but the absolute best price I've seen is 2k for it....

I really want a 30-06 rifle. It's the one true "hunting" caliber that isn't a crazy magnum round or one of those 7mm type rounds that me or my dad don't have (outside of .308 but I intend to get my AR-10 for that). But, the temptation to buy a Weatherby Vanguard in .300 Weatherby Mag is SO high... until I see the price of ammo.

I know as long as the package deal is Vortex or Leupold I'll be happy.

Sweet deal for you. I'll come visit in the summer sometime. :D

I hear you on the job downgrade. I gave up career possibilities when I moved to HI.

My dad has 40 acres in Northeastern Nevada. Prime elk, pronghorn, and mule deer area.

He's never seen it in person. OR EVEN PHOTOS!

Wasn't sure where to throw this but I figure most people here are probably fans of this guy like I am but look who just got a series for them greenlit:

I was just looking at legacy sports website and they have all sorts of howa 1500 (Same action as the weatherby) rifles and packages. Some good deals to be had and lots of options. Check it out.

Just saw you can get a howa 1500 with an ID green hogue over old stock and a zeiss terra scope for about 1,000 dollars. It's more than the weatherby but would be a cool set up.

Agreed, fuck .375 Ruger, I don't chase unicorns. What attracts me to .375 H&H, aside from the performance, is the popularity of the cartridge. What good is (insert high performance, low availability cartridge here) if you can't find it to shoot? Better stock up on dies and components of that's the case.
