Where the fuck did this brand "Tikka" come from and why is everyone in my county's shooting enthusiast Facebook page recommending their T3 over the Patriot?
What's the trigger in the Vanguard like? I was looking and pretty deadset on the Patriot but now I am, well, looking at more stuff. Annoyingly, which means more money..... ARGH!They have been around a long time. People seem to like them because they are aparently super accurate for the price. They are the budget line from the company Sako.
I've handled them but not shot them. Apparently they are awesome for the price but if you are looking for an awesome rifle in that price range, I still think the weatherby vanguard is the absolute best, they action is made by howa in Japan. They are sub moa guns out of the box with great triggers.
The main thing that's kept me away from tikka over the years is that they have a detachable box magazine which I don't like on a hunting rifle.
The t3 lite could probably be made into a very nice lite weight mountain gun, I'd still take a weatherby vanguard though.
The new weatherby vanguard wilderness is a step up again, flutes barrel, cera coated and a carbon fiber stock. About ~ 700 bucks on gunbroker with a sub moa guarantee. I have several weatherby rifles, I have one in 257wby that I've shot several antelopes with.

They were well-regarded for the price when I was looking into 30-06's as far back as like 8 years ago or so. And yeah...Sako.
I keep thinking I should try to trade my T3 Lite but then I figure the market for it would suck because it's LH. It's unfired. What kind of price range you think on that?

Unfortunately the only place I have near by that isn't a LGS is a Cabelas. I might have to bite the bullet so to speak and order one of these.
I suspect I'll end up with a Vanguard now. Grumble.
My dad has two Winchester 70 Alaska models. Bought one in 61 before they changed the bolt and another in the 80s. His .300 Win Mag (61) was like $250 from the Navy Exchange... now, that fucking gun MSRP is like $1200 NAKED.You won't be let down. They are fantastic rifles. Make sure you get a series 2. They upgraded the stock and trigger.
I've shot lots of nice hunting rifles and have lots of nice hunting rifles but vanguards are an absolute go to for me and have been for years.
I've taken antelope at 400+ yds with the 257 weatherby completely stock other than a Harris bipod and scope. I've also use the 30-06 tons. I'd never get rid of it.
I just looked around and chuck Hawks did a review of "budget hunting rifles". The vanguard 2 scored high praise over everything else in the review including the tikka. Go read it.
You really won't be let down, imo weatherby makes pretty much the best stock hunting rifles out there, Winchester 70s are up there too. I'm sure the tikka is great but I think the weatherby is better. Remind dosent currently make anything that interests me right now.
Depending on what you want, ruger Hawkeye is also a nice classic Mauser design that is pretty sweet.
Hi Greg,
What kind of budget do you want to stick with? The Mossberg is a great rifle but when you jump up to the Tikka and Weatherby, they are alot more.

Hopefully my tax return is nice and fat. I know initially I was talking about getting the Vortex Viper PST FFP but I am starting to think it's too much scope for what I need. Might just get this instead:My bank account hates me too.![]()

Sounds like there is a Local store that could order me a Weatherby. I like to buy from local places when I can instead of the places like GunBroker even if Broker might have better deals.
I emailed the shop telling them I was initially looking at the Mossberg Patriot with Vortex combo and said people had suggested the Tikka T3 or Weatherby to me and just was wondering if the shop carried them or it was something they could get their hands on. The response I got:
I'm pretty impressed.
Well, the Patriot Vortex combo is a ~$600 rifle. The Tikka T3 naked MSRP is like ~$700 and the Weatherby is about the same. The Weatherby Leupold combo is ~$1000That mossberg must be a cheap rifle if the tikka and weatherby are "a lot more". I mean both the tikka t3 and weatherby vanguard can be had for ~ 500 - 600 dollars in their base models.
I know what you mean about shopping locally id rather do it too but most of the times I've tried, the local places just can't get anywhere near the gun broker prices.
I recently got my ruger super Blackhawk bisley 454 for 700 dollars, bnib shipped. The cheapest my dad could find locally was 885 at sportsmans and 850 at a smaller but well known local shop.

Course he might be thinking I am looking at top of the line versions of the Tikka and Weatherby too.
Yeah, I think I'll probably end up with the Vanguard now at this point. I was thinking about taking the Mossberg and bedding it myself and shit or paying for a gunsmith to do it but at that point it's going to be running as much as a Weatherby. And one thing I HATE about the Patriot is the fucking bolt slop when it's open. Thing rattles around when open worse than a damn AK.Yeah top of the line weatherby rifles are quite expensive, at least they can be. A top of the line tikka is a Sako and those are priced right up there with nice weatherby rifles.
I was interested in a Sako finlight for awhile and that thing was 1600 bucks for the bare rifle.
I like the weatherby vanguards because they are bedded rather than free floated. The stocks really are much better than other rifles in the price range. Weatherbys warranty is a rained too.
