Those packs are hydration compatible, I was planning on removing the Camelbak from my Maxpedition sling pack and moving it onto one of those. I just kinda want a dedicated hunting day pack to carry basic stuff like RM maps, topographic maps, my knives, game bags, etc.

The day pack I carry to work has other stuff, which may end up in a hunting pack permanently. I don't want to mess around with constantly taking stuff out, putting it back in, swapping it out, etc. I do like the idea of owning and using a Kifaru at some point, but the way I hunt right now wouldn't justify it.

Yeah man, good packs make a huge difference. I love my eberlstock because to collapses down to a day pack size for hiking around but expands and can hold a ton of weight for when you are packing out. Me and my dad both have them.

They even have a seperate duffle type thing that you put your camp gear in the. When you get to a place to camp, you just pull that duffle thing out and cinch the pack down and you are ready to hike.

Smaller packs are cool in really mountainous areas where you are climbing a lot and are on terrain that's too steep to load with meat and walk down, for stuff like that you are usually just carrying he animal down.

For anything other than that though, I like a pack that can hold the meat rather than trying to just hold heavy bags while walking. Even for just a few kms if you have to make multiple trips back to get the kill, having a comfortable way to carry it all makes a massive difference.

For me it all comes down to having the lightest, most efficient gear I possibly can, messing around with stuff and hailing extra pounds through the mountains isn't the key to success imo.

Also getting as fit and strong As I possibly can before the hunt makes more difference than any piece of gear or expensive rifle.

Being in fantastic shape and having a perfect gear set up is an amazing feeling when you are just dead nuts dialed for the hunt, I wouldn't have it any other way.

That's what attracts me to the 1200, it's a 2 lbs pack empty. I personally find that when I buy a gigantic bag, I have a tendency to overpack; it would force me to be a bit more conservative. Almost all land out here are private farms, I'll never be that far from my truck and I could likely drive it over to load it up if I kill a white tail or muley. I just don't want to carry so much shit in my pockets next time around and once I'm out, I don't want to have to make trips back to the truck if I need something I don't have, like water or flagging tape, or if I have to shed a layer.

Everything is private land where I am, I may end up somewhere overnight, but I won't be for more than one night at a time. I can sleep in my truck; I am looking at buying an ultralight sleeping bag so I can sleep in the box.

People think the Prairies are flat, which a lot of it is, but I'm also near the Montana border, there are lots of coulees and fingers around. While I won't be hiking very steep terrain, not everything is accessible by vehicle or I don't want to be a dick and leave tire ruts on ranchers' properties by driving around everywhere. Not to mention all the spooked deer.

I'm attracted to that predator pack as well, but that's probably because I felt I took such a shitty shot and missed that doe last fall. Maybe I'll look into shooting sticks or something, that pack weighs 7 lbs empty, I still won't be packing out quarters and I won't have an electric call because I don't shoot coyotes, kind of a waste of space now that I think about it.

The tensing packs do look cool, I'd never seen them before. Do you just hunt deer or do you get out and go for moose and caribou too? I've hunted Sitka black tails before but I havnt done much deer hunting outside of Michigan where you just sit in a tree stand and shoot them with a bow.

In New Mexico where I'm from, elk and antelope are the big things. Lately I've been more into bighorns and big mountain hunts. Moose too...I love me some moose.

I'm hoping to take a moose with a handgun in the next few seasons.

Btw, how much do those tending packs go for? And is that a Canadian company?

Tenzing is based out of the US, I believe, but I think the packs themselves are produced offshore. Their level of quality and price seems to be comparable to Badlands or Alpz. I'd really like a higher quality pack like a Kifaru; those have some really cool features, but because of the way I hunt and my skill level, right now, I couldn't justify owning one.

Did you just get into hunting? How long have you been at it? nothing wrong with buying food gear that will last forever.

Last fall was my first big game season. Grouse "hunted" in Ontario a few times, but those things are so stupid over there that some guys literally kick them in the ass to launch them in the air to make it feel "more sporting".

I don't need a gigantic pack that holds elk quarters right now, I'll cross that bridge when I get there. For now, I just want a day pack to carry my shit.

Have you checked out Grey Ghost Gear? A friend has a light weight assault pack from them. It's really nice imo. He also has a really nice bag from eagle industies. Forgot the model.

I havnt used mystery ranch before. I used to have a Dana design pack for backpacking though. I guess mystery ranch is somehow an off shoot of the old Dana design company.

Awesome, glad you are getting into it and having fun. I have to watch out for the rockslide forum. Last time I went on there and looked around, I ended up ordering the kimber ascent and zeiss scope....and kenetrek boots lol...they are a bad influence over there.

Well, there go any plans of getting a pack anytime soon. I done fucked up and long story short, I need to have my bow restrung. I want to preserve my warranty, which may mean a 9 hour, round-trip drive up to the manufacturer near Saskatoon or finding a pet friendly motel and/or kennel.

If you still need a pack when I'm back in the states this summer, I'll send you one of my old ones. I have 5-6 packs that were casualties of my search for the perfect pack.

I'm also looking at a kifaru or a mystery ranch now but it's hard, I'm 6'4 so I need to try packs on to make sure they fit my long torso.

At least you have the most expensive pice of hunting gear worked out....the truck.

What sort of bow do you shoot? I'm looking at the pse dream season decree ti now.

I shoot an APA, they're a "local" company, west of Saskatoon, 450 km north of where I live.

One of their selling features is the cam lock, which is a pin you can pull out of the riser and insert into holes machines into the cam, at partial draw, which allows you to make minor adjustments on your own, without a bow press:

Which is also how I managed to screw it up; I put way too much slack in when I tried to correct for timing and couldn't the the string nock back onto the cam.

I've never heard of apa, it looks like a nice bow though.

I've been looking at some of the smaller bow companies like obsession but I keep coming back to pse and bear.

That's essentially the full sized version of what I have. Mine has a shorter axle-to-axle and excludes some of the features to save weight.
