What's Your Next Purchase? V5

This type of safety improves ergonomics and function immensely. It offers a bolt hold-open and allows for operation of the safety while maintaining a proper firing grip.

I thought AK's traditionally had no BHO, and for about 10% of us the safety offers zero functionality for the hand with the trigger finger.

Somehow the AR manages to have BHO, a safety that can be operated by either hand, and it doesn't scratch up the receiver.

It's something I've wanted to get into for a while. May as well start now. I put down a deposit, model and camo (kuiu verde) will be in in about a week.

Nice, I'm going to try painting my Hoyt Satori in Kuiu camo, just looks cool to me.

They don’t. The safety lever I posted has a notch to catch the bolt and a tab located much closer to the firing hand (for right handed shooters, anyway) for easy manipulation. This allows for dropping the bolt on a fresh mag, unlike bolt hold-open magazines alone (which release the carrier once removed from the firearm). Although using the two together makes for much smoother operation. Kalashnikov types do offer some degree of advantage for lefties, with the charging handle and selector being located on the right side of the firearm. Just a slightly different method and approach than a right handed shooter.

My love for AKs doesn’t diminish my appreciation of M4 style firearms. I’m not looking to have the AR-15 vs AK debate. This is the age of the AR, no doubt. Much better market for buyers at this stage.

What are your bow set up/accessories. Rest, sights, stabilizer, release, etc.

Arrow shafts? Do you practice with what you hunt with.

Right now I have a 5 pin spot Hogg, carter release, i think my rest is made by vapor trail and my stabilizer is a stokerized.

For arrows I just stick with Easton or carbon express.

My set up ends up changing every few years just by happenstance, I run into somebody selling or find a sale lol.

I just shoot whichever bow I have, I do keep a left hand 60lb bow around with a non release - release, and make sure I do 50-100 pills on my left side to avoid serious muscle imbalances. This has helped me a ton over the years, I’ve never gotten an injury from archery, most guys I know have to some degree.

I think I'm going to buy a bow. Shot a PSE Evoke 35 SE today. Shot a bowtech realm rs6 & ss and Mathews vertix as well. Really liked the Evoke.

PSE makes a good bow, I had a decree HD ti at one point and a Supra back 6-7 years ago, I really liked the Supra, but I don’t think they make it any longer or if they do it only comes in some gaudy target colors.

I’m shooting a hoyt right now but I really want to give prime archery a try.

As for bowtech....meh....the assassin was cool as hell because for 700 bucks you could get the whole package and it performed with more expensive set ups but they havnt made anything that turned me on for quite awhile.

I do have a free bear recurve as well. I was thinking of trying to shoot a moose with it but I don’t know lol.

Right on. Right-side charging handle is a plus for sure. Who uses safeties anyway? :)

I always thought AK's were cool but then when I started buying guns I somehow fell in love with the AR. Kinda surprised myself. They're fun in 7.62x39 too! Makes my VZ-58 somewhat obsolete.

VZ-58s are solid. The Century and ORF builds were hit or miss, but the Czechpoint and D-Technic VZ-58s were great. If you ever feel it has become a burden, I’ll be happy to fish it out of a river for you, free of charge.:D

D-Technik version here. Funny thing, I bought it thinking it was a CZ product. They were importing them at the time.

But this one says TGI Knox, TN. Paid $850 about 10 years ago.

That’s a bold plan! What’s the draw weight? How good are you with a bow? A real bow, not a compound bow. Some of the Kodiaks (and a few less common types) came in 75lb draw weight, enough to drop anything on this continent with a good shot. It could be done with less. It just depends on your skill with a recurve, and your luck that day as well.

I think Fred bear killed a Cape buffalo with like 45lb draw weight. He was a true expert though.

Mine is 60lbs and I can get all my arrows into a paper plate from about 25yds so I could hit a moose if I get close enough. The only thing I’ve ever killed with a recurve is a mule deer.

I’ve shot several elk and caribou with compound bows though.

I mostly shoot read for fun just out behind my house but for awhile I’ve thought it would be cool just to commit and try to get a bunch of animals here in AK with a trad bow one season.

D-Technik is the manufacturer, Czechpoint is the distributer. The problems started because Czechpoint was selling D-Technik receivers at one point for any bubba to build on, but if your serial number starts with VZ580 (or simply 580) it is good to go. It’s Czech factory built and technically a D-technik and Czechpoint product. TGI was an importer for Czechpoint so I’m betting that yours is the truth.

He also killed an elephant with a 75lb recurve and custom arrows, but it supposedly to a long time dying. Far longer than would be considered ethical by today’s standards.

60# draw weight is nothing to scoff at, but bold either way! Traditional archery is far more rewarding in my opinion. Be safe and good luck.

SN begins with 580.

So was CZ making their own versions or just importing someone else's?

Elephants don’t die all that fast even when you shoot them in the head with a big bore safari rifle. I went to a presentation once by a guy who had done all the big African animals (elephants, rhino, hippo, buffalo, lion etc) and he talked about how he shot his elephant between the eyes and it went down and was sort of unconscious but still breathing and continued to breath for like 30-45 minutes even after taking a few more bullets to the head.

Not sure how I feel about that but apparently the locals were like “yeah that’s what happens, nothing unusual here” and then people came from a bunch of different villages and basically picked it down to the bones for food.

As far as I know D-Technik was the sole manufacturer, they became CSA (Czech Small Arms) at some point. Czechpoint was the distributor. How that ties in with CZ (Česká Zbrojovka) I couldn’t tell you. I think CZ USA just sold them, but I don’t know for sure.

Full disclosure, I haven't killed shit with my bow yet; Western bowhunting is hard.

I have a Black Gold three pin slider and float the middle pin, which lets me split pins from the top or bottom.

For arrows, I shoot Gold Tip Velocity XTs, cut to like 26.5", with 100 grain brass inserts and I shoot 100 grain fieldpoints/broadheads. Not strongly for or against any arrow company, but I just happened to luck out and get good flight with minimal tuning with Gold Tip Velocities and brass inserts when I wanted to experiment with higher FOC.

My stabilizer is the Quivalizer, it's pretty gimmicky, but I have liked it so far.

My release is a TruBall Fang, wrist release. I still prefer trigger-style releases and I prefer having a hook rather than a dual caliper. I find it just a little easier to hook onto the D-loop.

So far looking/ comparing sights I'm leaning towards the Black Gold Ascent verdict 5 pin. Would probably just run 4 pins though.

After looking at a few rests I liked the Ripcord max design quite a bit.

Liked the tight spot qd quiver.

Completely unsure on stabilizer, will look into this more later. There is one that has the Kuiu Verde camo that would match the bow but I haven't read anything on it.
