What's wrong with Jose Aldo?

Wish I could remember where I saw it so I could try to link it but there’s an article (maybe Jack Slack?) that breaks down the numbers throughout Aldo’s career and actually there are only a couple fights where he really threw leg kicks with any serious volume. We all remember his fight with Faber and assume he was throwing kicks like that every fight but even at that time he just wasn’t.

Don’t get me wrong I’d love to see him use his kicks more but the truth is he was never a volume kicker outside of a couple fights.

He injured his foot way back in 2012 (prior to first Edgar fight) in a motorcycle accident and has had recurring foot injuries since.

It’s basically the point he stopped throwing as many leg kicks and built his game more around Boxing.
This. It's an accumulation of injuries that forced him to adapt to a different strategy.

Kinda like Connor, he went down the boxing path and abandoned what got him to the top.
Conor was a delusional fool who thought he could simultaneously be the best MMA fighter, and Boxer in the world, while being an undedicated, hedonist

Jose has fucked up legs (everyone who throws leg kicks that hard, that often, for that amount of time does) and adjusted his game accordingly

People use it as a knock like he’s too dumb to use them, I see an aging fighter who lost a massive tool, be able to adapt and be competitive with the best guys well out of his prime

Aldo stopped kicking when he was hit in an automobile accident. It sapped some of his grappling effectiveness as well as it hurt his back. He used it (kicks) sparingly due to the damage it would incur after the injury.

People like to think Aldo was in his prime in those Holloway fights, but if you incorporate that injury, among others; his antiquated, live sparring and training methodology at Nova Uniao; and his fight mileage, he was far from it. That was entering his thirteenth year in MMA, and it was his 29th fight.

He had an accident and he also had some injuries before that and he stopped throwing leg kicks after that, now he will occasionally throw a few leg kicks still but nowhere near as much as WEC days.

To think his best weapon was gone but he still beat so many top guys and reigned in UFC for long, even now at his old age no one can really beat him, the last time anyone even landed a punch on him was like 5 years ago, this so called new breed can't do nothing to him, just trying to hold on to the fence for dear life and waste away the time, anytime there is some skill involved he just styles on these young guys. I think he is 6-0 in his last 6 fights but thats my opinion and I've gone deep into it before based on the scoring criteria

Throwing so many kicks with such volume comes with a heavy price. He clearly damaged his legs which is why he stopped using them. Not because he forgot or just changed for no reason.

Same with wrestlers who stop using their wrestling and become strikers. The toll has to be paid somehow.

And btw, you don't think of this often because these men rarely talk about it and for good reason. That's being open about weaknesses your opponents could exploit.

Exactly. Damaged hips, knees, ankles... Lots of kicks will do that to you

This is why he'll forever be known as the FW king. Especially in my book.

I can't believe it took nine posts before someone mentioned the accident.

He should be incorporating more knees to compensate for the foot injury he had a while back.

I remember when he stopped using the killer leg kicks WAY back in teh day, & thinking WTF? I assumed they finally took their toll on him to where he had to start using them sparingly.

It was a long time ago & don't recall if that was before or after USADA, but maybe he was taking some banned substancez for teh pain & then had to quit using them? I recall his bro Barao going south quickly after USADA began.

Jose Aldo was known for his incredible leg kicks, like in the Urijah Faber fight, Jose Aldo's kicks are an immensely powerful part of his game, Jose Aldo even dropped Peter Yan with leg kicks, yet Jose Aldo threw almost no kicks against Mario Bautista and got hugged the entire time.

Jose refuses to implement an important part of his game, and he seems to be unable to get off the fence, definitely not a safe bet.
I'm open to be proven wrong bit i think his scooter accident contributed

Scooter injury. TKZ injury. Fight mileage. Age. Effect of using said kicks. You can only batter your feet into another person's body so often before it fucks you up after other things have as well.

Foot injuries throughout the years. He still has the power and speed when he chooses to through them but he's super careful about it nowadays.

Well old as in fight mileage not age.
