Recently there were two AAA retro shmups released, ZPF and Earthion. The publisher of ZPF provided only a physical release and only promised to eventually make a digital one. The publisher of Earthion did the opposite, they provided a digital release but no physical release(except on modern consoles where you can just download it anyways).

Which style do you think should be preferred for handling these retro game releases?

Digital is ludicrously fast, organized and you can find great sales. But I do miss the art.

Physical disc I prefer, but too many games require patches after the disc.

I dont mind digital at all. I hate anything that takes up space at this point in my life.

I just dont like the "flimsiness" that can come with digital ownership.

Physical is barely physical these days, so I don't really care to grab them anymore. Not like having a library of games before the digital takeover. A disc is basically a license to download the digital version, unless for some strange reason you want to play the V1 edition of the game.

There's barely a point for physical releases these days, other than collectability I guess.

I always preferred physical in the past, even for PC, as they had those giant boxes and cool box art. I had a special book shelf where I loved displaying my fav games alongside my fav books, and a few figures, like they were competing with each other for my top spots. There were a lot of different shapes, made it fun to decorate.

Once a lot of PC games started using normal DVD cases with Games for Windows Live, coupled with rampant CD key issues, I wasn't hard to get me all aboard the Steam/GOG trains. Even with my physical PC games, I often found myself using gamecopy world to crack my games, and wishing I didn't needs the discs at all. PC just made better sense digital, especially with them being forever titles, regardles of your system, It's too convenient. It also helped with the way Steam displays our libraries/most played games, and all the relevant stuff in the community hub. It's such a great service.

For consoles, I would still prefer having them as physical if they weren't just basically codes in a box, especially Switch 2 games. I love my Switch, 3DS, DS and PSP cases with a bunch of cartridges ready to roll regardless of internet. Are all Switch 2 games boxes with codes now? I haven't bought a current gen console, so I don't know what PS5 and Xbox are like, but most of my PS4 games required long download times on physical copies, iirc.

Not haing a digital release is worse not only for me but the dev as well. Consoles are being made with no disc. Your essentially cutting your potential market by half.

I still buy Nintendo first party physical. Everything else digital. My reason is Switch storage is terrible. Fills up so fast

I prefer physical as it makes me feel like I own the game because of its box lmao.

Thanks to physical disc, I might be able to track down an old used disc of a game that might be shitty and not have digital, but features an IP I'm interested in.

I miss having a big stack of videogames next to my consoles, and I do worry about consumer rights, but honestly, digital is far better.

Thousands of videogames accessable by a single click, with no physical limitations to hold it back.

Also, disks got damaged and so did disk drives. I had to replace my Dreamcast twice due to overheating, and threw my Xbox 360 in a slip because it would no longer read disks properly whilst I was trying to play Fable 2 during a Christmas. My digital only One S and Series S however, had no issues.

Technology is like social media. Ideally it's a wonderful thing, but peoples dickishness tend to use evolution for wrongsake.

Kind of hard to admit he was right, isn't it?

I keep a small USB powered Honeywell fan directed at the PS4 whenever it's on or else I'll likely hear the PS4's loud fan running to deter the heat. I intend to do that with PS5 once I start using it, especially since I'm scared after reading an article saying something about the heatsink or liquid cooling thing might come off if used vertically. The USB fan powered by UPS's USB port keeps the PS4 from getting hot or at least that surface.
