As for MMA it has to be the overhand right. The reality is most MMA fighters don't have the boxing technique and mechanics to throw textbook hooks and crosses.

In boxing it's gotta be straight right, then left hook.

What? Overhand is way more common than a hook. MMA is full of sloppy brawlers that spam overhands from halfway across the cage. You need to be in decent range to land a hook.

I do kickboxing every now and then and I can not even throw a overhand. I never throw it on a bag. Hooks mostly. Cross, jab, upercut. But overhand just doesn't generate power for me it feels weird and wasteful. The movement feels extra.

The wrestling aspect has made overhands more popular. Faking a shot to drop the hands and coming over the top with a big right is basic MMA wrestleboxer 101.

Also even what most people think of an overhand isn't really a true overhand.

Overhands everyone remembers when it works but good form and proper fighting dictates that the cross will deliver more KOs then any other punch..

Its why its one of the most important punches and one of the very first ones you learn when learning to fight.... Aka the 1-2..

Overhands are much more inconsistent...
