what's more important? strength or speed? Why bulk when moving up in weight?

I see people say that speed kills all the time, yet fighters choose to bulk up when moving up in weight? why so? I think the best way to move up in weight is improve core strength but not overtly bulk, then use your speed as advantage. like Fedor or Cormier at HW

Entirely depends on your style and body type.

Someone who is a elusive counter striker like let's say Anderson, shouldn't bulk much at 205 because a speed advantage would be useful for him.

Someone with a more grappling/grinding heavy style should definitely add a few pounds of muscle.

Being undersized is ok in striking in grappling its a killer.

if u base ur whole game around speed and reflexes ur gonna hit a wall on ur 30's when ur reaction speed is just gonna diminish and ur gonna get caught by shit that in ur 20's it wouldn't have hit u

I agree, that's why I think Conor is making a terrible mistake if he bulks up to 170+ even for the WW division

Conor already looked too big in his last fight. He is putting on more weight which is a bad idea. He should work on his cardio and come in more trim.

I like your picture example TC.

Exactly, THIS. if you dont bulk up and you face a good grappler who has no intentions of standing then you are in trouble. weight advantage is huge in grappling

I agree but I think his size was from gaining weight not gaining size. That's just his walk around weight

Speed for the striker, power for the wrestler.

You lose the speed early in life but keep the power.

Flash would fuck up Superman.

Im drunk and don't know what I'm talking about.

This is very true.

Fighters who get by "out-athleting" their opponents instead of outskilling them only last for so long.

Look at Roy Jones for example. He was able to fight in a way that others couldn't because he was so much more physically gifted than them, but when he slowed down in his later years he eventually got clipped. Not only that but we are also more prone to injuries and take a longer time to recover from them as we age, and when you are injured you can't physically perform the same as before. Mirko CroCop, Anderson Silva, same thing happened to them.

Whereas someone like Josh Barnett, who has a large arsenal of different skills doesn't have to rely on his physical attributes and can still compete against the best at an older age.

In wrestling its a killer... Its ok in striking but you can still absolutely get overwhelmed on the feet by a bigger guy who is less skilled than you.

But size matters the least in a BJJ fight. In BJJ, technique beats strength almost every time.

Speed is nice when the fight remains standing and may even counter a size advantage, but it's a whole different story when someone who's got 30 lbs on you drills you into the canvas and proceeds to put all his weight on you.
