Looking back at when Khamzat showed his Kryptonite..

Both Burns & Usman really counter grappled and made Khanzat bloody WORK for it. Thats why he got gassed by round 3. Dricus did shit nothing. Not good enough an effort

He probably expected Khamzat to tire eventually and thought that he'd get more opportunities to land something big standing. Also that his athleticism and strength would allow him to compensate for the massive disparity in their grappling skills a lot more than it ultimately did.

Like a lot of people, he thought the cardio issues Khamzat previously had at ww would carry over to mw. Now that we know that's not the case, everyone acts like that's the dumbest logic in the world. Khamzat also hasn't been fighting often, so it's hard to get a look at how much he's been improving. Clearly he either never had the cardio issues at mw, or has trained and improved his cardio while he's been out. I think a LOT of people could have foreseen an outcome like this if they knew Khamzat could hold him down for 5 rounds without gassing.

Waiting for your opponent to gas isn't a plan so much as it's a prayer. If you want your opponent to gas you make your opponent gas by making your opponent work.

I suspect like a lot of people facing dominant wrestlers, they gameplanned that THEY wouldn't get instantly and permanently trapped and then were all shocked pikachu when they indeed were instantly trapped. Used to see it all the time with people facing gsp, hughes, jones, khabib, etc.

He probably banked on his physicality being the difference maker, and prayed that Chimaev's unproven cardio in the later rds would be his window.

He seemingly ignored that Khamzat is also gifted in the physicality department, and when he couldn't resist being taken down even a little,
Khamzat just took the wheel and kept it on cruise control until it was over.

His headcoach couldn't teach him proper standup technique in 20 years.
In hindsight how did we expect he would get a full ground game in half a year?

He got lucky getting an athlete like Dricus, who probably learns more from his training partners, than his trainer.
Seen this in quite a few gyms.

His striking was on point during the few seconds each round he got to strike. He just had one chance each time and the shots that made contact were absorbed by Chimaev's arms and shoulders.

Pretty sure his plan was for a similar fight to play out, except DDP is good enough to reverse position and Chimaev gets tired enough for the fight's momentum to change before the last two minutes. He was able to survive 25 minutes with who's evidently now the best wrestler in the league. He's an animal but he hasn't had enough time to gain the skills he needs.

I also think he relied way too much on his brut strengh. But he has too much of a deficit grappling wise to be effective. He was put twice into a crucifix position ffs, the 3rd time he just began to understand. Something else is expected from the world champion. And wrestling wont be sufficient against guys like these. Try to look for more complete grappling coach who implement judo as well. The guy ended up on the ground after all of khamzat trips

His game plan probably consisted of his opponent having weaker grip strength.

The idea that he wouldn't even be able to budge with Chimaev on him likely never crossed his mind nor anyone else's.

The interesting thing is Dricus base was judo. He started judo at the age of young age of 5 ..for 5-6 years.

Im a judoka. I expected him to at least provide some counter grappling , some hardships for Khamzat, but none. Zero resistance.

Maybe he literally only trained judo till he was 12 then stopped
