Hello, mostly great citizens of sherdog.
<Wink2>
I’m here seeking parenting advice on this beautiful night. I have two kids, ages 7 and 5. We put them to bed around 8 pm every night. Our routine (wife and I) is to read a chapter from a book and then watch a music video with the kids. It’s around 8:30 pm by the time we are done with this routine. The wife and I take turns with each kid. Lately my seven year old hasn’t been able to go to sleep once we leave. I’m wondering if this bedtime is too early? Great parents of sherdog, what time do or did you put your kid to bed when they were 7 years old?

Thanks <Wendy2>

9 PM seems ok for the 7 year old. If he gets out of school and home by 4, and you put him in bed by 8, he probably hasnt had a lot of time to have fun and wind down.

6 and 4 here
Both in school / kindergarten.
We target 7pm,but do a bedtime routine that does take 30min like yours. No music video - I think that format of entertainment is potentially sleep disruptive?
Our kids are early risers though, always up by 6.

What time do your kids awaken?

the 5 yr old gets up at 6 AM and the 7 yr old gets up at 7 am.

The music video has been their routine from when they were born. We limit screen time more than most parents. It’s kind of our family thing, watching music videos together. And the wife and I pick music videos and tell stories about the songs and bands we like. But maybe you’re right that it could be disruptive. I’ll consider changing the order, maybe.

Kid is two. Was strictly putting her to bed at 9, but her naps started getting later. She's going to bed at 10 a lot of the time now

The later she goes to sleep, the better it is for my wife since that means they wake up later

That makes sense. I've had friends say their kids come barreling into their room at like 5:30 in a Saturday. I'd lose my shit.

I have a 4 and 7 year old and they usually crash out by 9:30 or 10
different cultures and all I noticed fast twitch muscle challenged Americans put their kids to bed super early

when I was a kid we went to bed pretty much when we felt like it or just passed out on the couch

I remember when I enter to a school that was very different from my neighborhood demos. this kid was bringing that he got to stay up to 9 once and that made him the class badass. they all called me a liar when I aid I usually was up late watching adult swim.

got a almost 7 year old n she goess to bed between 10 n 11, bit late IMO, earlier would b better. grade 1 b doing homework to 10pm every night.

Our children are a bit younger and they go to bed between 7 and 7:30 during the week. Maybe 7:30 and 8 during the weenk end

Holy shit you guys put your kids late to bed. in our case though we have some commuting and school starts early so we are early birds.

8 year old goes to sleep whenever she wants, 3 year old at around 20:00-21:00

We’ve always put our kids to bed relatively late compared to our friends with similarly aged kids. My son is 9 and my daughter is 7 and we put them to bed between 9 and 9:30pm. Even like 6+ years ago we didn’t really put them to bed any earlier than 8:30. We had friends that put their kids to bed at 7pm in their toddler years which to us always seemed fucking nuts with how early that was. Pre-Covid my wife or I wouldn’t even get home from work until like 6pm and we’d be rushing to pick our kids up from daycare before it closed at 5:45pm. No fucking way we’re putting them to bed at 7pm if we’re eating dinner after 6:30pm. Why even have kids if you’re only going to spend 1 hour with them five days of the week?

Tell that to my crazy wife. There is always a rush with her.

I handle the morning routine for our kids. My wife starts work downtown at 7:30am so she’s out the door at like 6:40am every day. Kids wake up between 7:00 and 7:30. I give them breakfast, pack their lunches and take them to school for 8:30am, come back home (we live in the suburbs like two blocks away from their school) and start work. I work remotely and my typical work day is 8:45 - 5:15pm then I’ll pick up the kids from out-of-school care for 5:30pm.

Lather rinse repeat.

It was about 8pm when my daughter was that age, or rather 8 was the time I started putting her to bed but it was probably closer to 9 by the time she'd finished stalling.
