Cause pride is very natural.

For example.. let’s take UfC fighters. These guys all have insane, insane egos. But guys like mcgregor jones etc go beyond that.

What’s the difference? Is it drugs or is it hatred? Or do they just love themselves too much?

people love their labels today, that much i know. I'm skeptical when i hear, "he's a malignant narcissist" or whatever. Just because you don't like someone or disagree with them doesn't make them satan incarnate.

most fighters at least in boxing and very often in mma too are humble. Of course there is no shortage of meatheads but you might not even be able to coax a lot of real fighters into a fight without just jumping on them, they are usually mellow and usually humble and usually they've lost badly at some point along the line unlike 99 percent of the men you see on the street walking around barking.

Upbringing maybe. Morals?
society too, our culture is all about competition, you can't have that without teaching people that they have to act like they are more important than others.

Very good point.

I'm guessing if we add it all up, parenting?

Parenting has to have something to do with it in one way or the other, I would think. Just look at Barron Trump, I don't know jack shit about the kid but just looking at him, I be thinking, "this little motherfucker just like his daddy".

Not being able to see fault in yourself or take responsibility for any of you behaviour or defeats

I’m just guessing, but that’s when it goes to another level and becomes self destructive
nah, that's so goddamned common, no one likes to take blame or be criticized. People who have power tend to be able to avoid, stifle that or have it so it's not in their sight.

Not a big believer in labels as I mentioned but I will say, when i hear narcissistic or sociopathic, i just think how in comparison to how the native tribes generally were, everyone is sociopathic here in comparison. I'm just now in my 50's being able to stop the rest of the world from just running me over with their own agendas. I still would just prefer not to deal with any of it. The rules are bad so of course the people are too.

I've never heard him speak. it would be funny if they sound exactly alike, I sound exactly like my dad.....
Maybe you are right with the society being the root. Parenting and role models fall under that umbrella, as so entertainment and manners

me either, so i'm kinda joking, he might be a nice kid but he sure looks like a little arrogant motherfucker just like his daddy.

Recognizing when the situation isn't about you.

Here's an example I like.....Adam Sandler went to an IHOP and was told he couldn't get a table for for 20 minutes. One of the most recognizable celebrities on the planet, but he had a mask on.

How many celebs would have thrown a fit and demanded special treatment? Probably most.

Adam instead choose not to wait and left. But wait there's more! Once word got out about the incident, the company partnered with him to raise money for one of his charities.

alot definitely. Especially if it's something important, I remember hearing about a local newsman demanding service in a hospital and sounding like a total jerk, "I'm Steve Pool!" However, that seems a rare story about him, most of the stories of he and the public are just him being a nice guy. My brother met him, said he "saw you in third grade" Steve Pool joked, "I remember you". Sometimes all of us are a jerk, and I know I have my moments all the damned time. Rarely in those types of settings but I've had to come back and apologize many times.

I also recall reading a story about Greg Haugen (boxer) being offered to skip the line for the bathroom at some event, he declined politely and said he'd wait like everyone else. But, I've seen firsthand the pro bb'r act entitled or special, or ask to cut the line at the store for an autograph or some shit.

Ego and pride can make a person full of themselves and rather obnoxious...but they still are capable of empathy , knowing when they are wrong , being aware of other people's feelings and so on. They aren't mentally ill , they are self aware and they are just prideful. It's sort of a character flaw but if they want to work it out and change and grow they can. Deep down if they are wrong they are aware

A Narcissist is a mental disorder where a person cannot regulate themselves and their emotions and is not capable of feeling anything for anyone but themselves. They need to destroy to feel and they burn everything they touch to the ground. They are not capable of change or growth or reflection. The idea that they might have been wrong about something is not possible for them to think.

I don't know jones personally but it seems like he very well might be one. McGregor is harder to judge and might just be an addict with an ego.

Narcissists need everyone to acknowledge every little thing they do, like it’s some great accomplishment.

Someone who is just confident, or maybe has a bit too big an ego, doesn’t necessarily need that.

God damn, that was a great post. Everyone should like this post. It’s literally the best post ever made on sherdog. If you don’t like my post, you’re a goddamn communist.

I disagree.. and that’s the main thing I wanted to discuss

Can you be very, very competitive without being a narcissist?

I think that competitive drive comes from conditioning.. in my personal life.. I’ve experienced too many instances where I thought everything was cool.. “oh it doesn’t matter if you win.. youre in good position regardless”

Then I take the L and everything falls apart. Same reason you stay on that ass even if you’ve got a big lead

But I’m not a high achiever. Maybe narcissists take themselves so seriously that never needed to be taught that lesson..

Self awareness and humility. I am a confident person and I truly believe I can pretty much do whatever I want to (within reason) but outside of me saying this, I really don’t think my personality IRL reflects that.

I’m aware how it would sound if I bragged to my coworkers how I’m the best ever at my job or bragged to my teammates how I’m the best hockey player ever. My father told me once that lions don’t need to remind you they’re lions
