In general, comedies and horror movies never get high ratings for some reason.

I consider these masterpieces but they have low scores on IMDB:

Wedding Crashers (7/10)
Hereditary (7.3/10)
It Follows (6.8/10)

Also, I know this one isn't a masterpiece, but I love:

2012 (5.8/10)

Under The Skin 6.3/10

 

[Crazy Source]

"Hurlyburly" 1998 film, 5.8/10 on IMDB. Sean Penn, Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Garry Shandling, Meg Ryan, Chazz Palminteri. Very dialogue heavy, which I like. Pretty sure it was adapted from a play.

Hard To Be A God - 6.5/10

I would argue stuff which gets a bit of hype, enough to be watched by mainstream audiences a bit but is quite challenging generally tends to score quite low.

You have a certain part of such audience who simply don't want to engage with these kinds of films at all.
