What's the point to have those two names written differently ?
 
Before the "E double toothpicks" is my take on it.

Or, Jon is short for Jonathan, and John is, um, just John.

American spelling is different for some Irish surnames.

Examples:

(USA) Roache --- Roche (Ireland)
(USA) Kavanaugh ‐-- Kavanagh (Ireland)

Pretty sure they are not the actual original, Irish spellings, even then. More the English-Irish spelling.

No that's how we spell these surnames in Ireland. Obviously they're a product of the anglicisation of Irish language.
