What is the definitive Resident Evil?

FPS make you dizzy?
Not at all. I don't even mind lower than my preferred FOV on FPS games, but I'll always change it if I can. It's just 3rd person games when the character is too close to the camera. It's above Leon's hips in the og Re4. RE5 was even worse from what I recall.

Terrible FOV's are a design choice if I remember correctly, as they feel it makes the game more claustrophobic/scary. It's far better in the remakes.

Perhaps but it hit a wall. There is no shot it gets to 13M copies since the majority of a game's momentum is on launch. MAYBE it hits 8M on a steam sale but to hit 13? No shot.

Horror sells. People love being scared.
It has not and will only continue to sell as it hits deep discounts like all the other remakes have. You can regularly get RE2make for $10.

We’ve had this discussion before lol. I’m not sure why you have this crusade against RE4. It’s the most popular entry in the franchise and an excellent game.

I do prefer more survival horror so I’m hoping we get that in RE9 and the Code Veronica/Zero remakes.

Always loved RE Code Veronica X on PS2. RE4 will always be goat.

Why? Because we've done the action horror crap before which started with the original re4 and it killed the series which caused a reboot.

No. Re4 is not catching 7 or 2. That ship has sailed. The only reason we are even discussing resident evil is because 7 revived the series back to it's horror roots.

Resident evil is not call of duty with zombies.

It has not. After a year of sales, RE4 has sold more than any other RE title.

Even more people will be buying it when it’s $30, $20, $10.

Resident Evil is whatever the director’s decide it is.

Either REmake or 4, depending on which style you prefer.

For me it is RE7 and it isn't even close. It was the first time I felt uncomfortable in a Resident Evil game since Resident Evil 2 back on the original PlayStation. RE7 is also one of the most important games Capcom ever made because it is what started the redemption arc. Prior to that game they were releasing some pretty awful titles. All the modern success RE currently has is because of this game. I remember playing that demo for RE7 and actually being nervous about what's around the corner. RE4 is a nice action title but I was never once scared or nervous, you have way too many weapons and ammunition to ever feel that way. To me the definitive RE is a game that puts you into a dire situation and you have very limited resources. RE8 was kind of a disappointing follow up. I loved the area with the dolls and the baby and also some of the castle. The factory and other stuff was way too much like RE4 though and then playing as Chris was just a joke lol.

I think it starts with your protagonist feeling out of their element and overwhelmed. There is a huge difference in Leon Kennedy in RE2 versus 4. In 2, he's out of his element/new to the scene...hasn't a clue what's going on and felt like he was just trying to survive and get out of the city.

RE4 Leon Kennedy is now Chuck Norris. He can kung fu not zombies, ...dodge explosions then land in that heroic pose like an action hero and is ready for anything the game tosses his way. And when ya need ammo, don't worry! There is a store keep that just so happens to be in the middle of nowhere whom the not zombies thankfully ignore and this store clerk thankfully happens to have all the guns and ammo you need!

I'll pay full price for a RE7 I have no desire to even pay half price for 4.

And then there’s the ship section.

I've played four of them.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica for Dreamcast was the first RE that I really got, and was able to complete. I really liked it, preferred the Claire part over the Chris part.

I played Resident Evil 2 for Dreamcast after that. It was probably better designed, but it was a straight PS port and was dated.

Resident Evil 5 took a lot of adjusting to, but I was able to get a rhythm going eventually. It was fine, middle of the road.

I didn't get very far with Resident Evil for the Sega Saturn. I was very young, really struggled with the controls and the dogs terrified me.

The Guest House in RE7 is probably the best opening in any game imo.

I thought that the intro and first level were some of the best horror moments, level design and game mechanisms in video game history. It was nothing short of mastery how they seamlessly transitioned from a kind of "texas chainsaw vibe" to a Resident Evil game with keys, crafting and puzzles. To this day I am floored by how they're able to slide you into that without you even noticing it.

I view RE7 as one of the most frustratingly beautiful experiences ever in gaming. Because nothing ever gets even close to being as good as that house. The back house with Marguritte is awesome, but still nowhere near as good. And the level with Lucas was... just fine. Each level gets a little worse. The mine section at the end is just baffling to me. It's hard to reconcile that with what you've played in the opening hours.

But nothing can take away from how incredible the first part is.
