What if Genki Sudo didn't retire early?

He got robbed so badly against Ludwig that they actually changed the rules of the sport. Seriously.
Do you mind explaining what the rule changes were? Genuinely curious.

On a serious note though. Genki was a legit grappler in his era and his stand up was strange enough to cause many fighters problems. He was confidence incarnate and a showman without being rude and obnoxious which seems to be the way about things today. He would be very entertaning today for sure, but the sport has evolved since his time and like many greats he would start losing eventually, and then everyone would say he was never any good, just look at BJ Penn and Fedor. Time gets everyone and fans are harsh.

Define early
29 years old is young anyway you slice it.

Genki Sudo was as skilled as any during his time and few were more entertaining in and out of the ring/Octagon than Sudo was. Sudo have been forgotten or unknown by most American MMA fans and all casual fans for sure but he's definitely a gem of a fighter and well worth watching.

Here's a gem from back in 2001, right after Sudo made his MMA debut and he entered the Westside grappling tournament

even now, genki sudo is still the only fighter i ever considered to be a fan of.

He was beating up Ludwig so badly on the ground in round 3 that the ref broke them up so the doctor could take a look. Doc decided Ludwig was OK to continue. Fight was restarted standing (as per the rules at the time) and Ludwig chipped away with strikes on the feet for the last half of the round. Two judges somehow scored round 3 for Ludwig and he won a split decision. (Genki won round 1, Ludwig won round 2, not up for debate.)

Basically, Ludwig was rewarded with a standup for getting his ass kicked, and then the judges somehow gave him the round.

A shitstorm was raised and the rules were changed so that if a fight is paused for a doctor check, the fight is then restarted in the same position.

jokes aside, Genki was an amazing fighter. Great striking, movement, grappling ability. He was skilled and fluid everywhere

for the era he came up in, he was among the best. Ridiculously underrated and probably nowhere near what his potential was.

He would have either languished in Japan like Aoki or gotten destroyed outside of Japan in the UFC or even Bellator.

Yeah, because Genki and Aoki are totally similar.

Also, Genki went 2-1 in the UFC with a thrashing of Mike Brown, and as already mentioned his loss was a total robbery.

*No fighter ever retired early.
If they don't want to fight anymore, it is time to retire.

* Almost. I suppose there be an exception or extenuating circumstances.

huge fan of genki, if he didn't retire and was a regular in the UFC...i'd say he'd be a solid top 15, maybe top 10 guy.

all his antics is part of why we love him, but it probably would have cost him some fights he should've won.

fuck that ludwig robbery btw.
