What happened to Gunnar Nelson?

sounds scary!

It wasn’t like a big packed stairway either, he started coming down as soon as I started going up and it was just me and him there. That death stare haunts my nightmares

I’m 6ft 4 and about 220lbs but make no mistake, Gunnar would have annihilated me

For a second I forgot I'm on Sherdog :D, hopefully the mods don't ban me for this stupid question. Thanks for going easy on me!

Anyway, in all seriousness this time, that's a cool story.

I always liked Gunnar. Unique fighter. Karate style striking mixed with great BJJ.

Remember when Conor McGregor was introduced as Gunnar Nelson's teammate?

I remember Conor fanboys telling me they were both going to rule LW/WW division for years. Worked out well.

The vibe I get from reading about him is that fighting isn't and never was his main thing in life. He was never particularly active. He had maximum three fights a year and I think that was only one year. Seems now like he's almost semi retired.

He is a local fighter. Only 3 of his 13 fights in the UFC have been outside of Northern Europe. And 2 of those were only because Conor was headlining PPV's against Mendes and Aldo... 5 years ago.

I doubt he returns to the octagon until 2022.

I met Gunnar Nelson once when I was in my town centre going for a meal with my family. I was walking up the stairs to the place and he’s walking down and I sort of stared him out but he didn’t look away, he had that dead stare like Fedor has, as I was trying to figure out where I recognised him from. Really surreal moment and I found out later that he was here with his team to help some low level fighters in a small tournament

You should have asked him for a hug.

he's always fun to watch fight.

No, he is frustrating as fuck to watch fight lately. It almost seems like he'd rather be doing something else.

If he would cut to 155 he would be top 5-10 again very quickly. He always gets over powered in his fights.

Wouldn't be a lock imo. Gilbert Burns had trouble at 155. I think he would crack the top 15, but also think there is a reason he has never made the drop.

You are completely right in that he may under perform, but Gunnar has always been over powered in a lot of his losses. Gunnar might have similar issues as he did compete at 88kg in grappling. IMO he would be much better at 155. He appears to be the kind of person who could cut quite easily, but he could always have kidney issues. Gilbert seemed to be struggling to get down to 155 and it seemed to cause issues with recovering from big shots. They do seem to be very different athletes in their fight style

Do you happen to have the gif of his constant eye pokes in that fight?

There was a slowed down gif that showed some of the most subtle well placed eye pokes I have ever seen. I was mad at the time, but after I was impressed because it seemed he had worked out how to use eye pokes effectively. He could have sold that eye poke system as a martial art back in the 90s hahaha. It was all done with subtle shots to the eye with his thumb etc.

edit: found it

Looks like the doom guy when he is dead

Its kind of funny. We always aknowledge the brutal weightcuts that UFC fighters have to do nowadays, often with longterm damage to kidney...etc but as soon as someone looses its GO A WEIGHTCLASS DOWN YOU FATTY or lazy POS.

Its absurd how much weight guys like Poirier cut but instead of calling that out we blame the ones that dont do these weight cuts.UFC desperately needs weight cut rules as One implements them.
