what do you define as street smart and book smart

I think smart is smart. But to really excel at something you need Passion. School is not set up in a way to make people passionate about learning. So a lot of people lose interest in being "book smart" and make money or succeed in other ways.

Street smart as I see it is just smart. Although because it's harder to quantify, stupid people claim to be street smart. It's harder to fake book smart.

Book smart= smart, generally speaking, though possibly lacking common sense or social skills.

Street Smart= what stupid people who failed at school, tests, profession, and any other objective measurement of intelligence like to tell themselves they possess- and try to convince others- so that they don't have acknowledge the truth: they're just stupid.
'When someone says "I'm not book smart, I'm street smart"... All I hear is "I'm not real smart, I'm imaginary smart"...'
More succinctly put.

"street smart" is just hindsight bias that makes people feel good about themselves.

LOL at people shitting on street smart people. You do know there are people who live their lives in a suburban bubble and if put in a situation where they are put in a city setting/ rural setting, they wont know what to do.

Book smart means you know things.

Street smart means you know people.

some say bill gates was street smart some say book smart some say
both

some say street smart is being able to teach yourself while book
smart is going to n instuitution to learn

but what do you define as street smart and book smart

If you know anything about Bill Gates you know that luck and privilage had a shitload to do with his success.

My cousin put it very well:

"Book Smarts" is a shortened articulation for THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE and

"Street Smarts" is a shortened articulation for EMPIRICAL KNOWLEDGE

These are two distinct skill sets.

The thing is that people with only theoretical knowledge dont understand that street smarts means empirical knowledge because they HAVE no empirical knowledge.

Guarantee in this thread you will hear "derp you dont need street smarts cuz im not on a street herp derp". Yes, empirical knowledge is a real thing stupid!

Edit: looks like we already have a few derps in this thread already!! haha told you!

I don't like the term 'common sense' anymore.

In all reality, in today's age a lot of things I figure as being no brainers (In contrast to a social situation, for example) aren't close enough to 'common' amongst the general population for my liking.

Oh, and when someone says "I'm not book smart, I'm street smart." It's basically like they're saying. "No, I'm not smart, but I can hook you up with an 8-ball in about three minutes."

I'm slightly exaggerating the above statement, don't flame me.

Madmick put it very well, also.

Book smarts vs street Smarts

knowing what phone to buy vs knowing how to get it for a quarter of the price

getting the interview vs getting the job

plethora of theory vs plethora of pussy

Bjorn Rebney vs Dana Fucking White

I think I'm saying the opposite of what you are, but here it goes anyway.

"Common sense" is code for "utterly unsubstantiated opinion". There'll be two people holding diametrically opposing views, neither has formulated the reasoning in their mind, but both are claiming that "it's just common sense".

Common sense vs Learned sense

That's kind of how I see it.

That's what I've always associated it with for the most part. Common sense and experience typically apply to street smarts in my mind, while book smarts is more of the honor student that carries a 4.0 and can't figure out how to pull start a lawnmower.

Obviously they aren't mutually exclusive. Some people have one or the other, some have both, and some are like my step mother and possess neither.

Smart people are the ones that at least don't limit themselves to "book smart vs street smart"...

I vehemently deplore the "book smart vs street smart" thing. Such bullshit.

^ yes BRF, exactly.

If you dont know what street smarts are or when they are lacking, you have probably never met that uber-sheltered 4.0 GPA college chic who speaks 3 languages but is completely oblivious to everything going on around her and couldnt make a friend in any language.

a real life example of street smart is someone i know
irish immigrant who is a multi millionaire through buying property around central london
he cant read or write at all
one of his little tricks is driving a ten year citroen to business meetings so he looks broke
the guy is polluted with money

thats an example of a "street" smart person because he has never read a book in his life

Sounds made up

street smart = what people who aren't book smart say they are.

Only a tiny bit kidding, some people have natural faculties and aren't highly classical trained, i.e. your successful self made entrepeneur that didn't graduate high school.

Your ability to read, influence, and manipulate people might fall under street smart but this isn't usually directly how people mean it when the say they are street smart.
