what do you define as street smart and book smart

Oh, and when someone says "I'm not book smart, I'm street smart." It's basically like they're saying. "No, I'm not smart, but I can hook you up with an 8-ball in about three minutes."

Fuckin lol. You are spot on. Having street smart means you answer the question "Do you party?" by pulling a rose stem out of your pocket.

Rofl @ this thread.

Take me for example. I studied computer science. What I learned in the major, my programming skills - book smart

When it came to getting the research position that everyone wanted, I got that shit easy. Why? Because I was the most social out of all that applied. The professor knew he'd be spending a lot of one-on-one time with the student, and wanted someone that wasn't a total fuckin bore. My people skills - street smart

Again, lol at people discrediting street smarts.

Diaz bros shit-talking their opponent to get a mental advantage is a shining example of street smarts

I love both Diaz bros, but I think their shit-talking originates from their "street braindamage".

Rose stem? Or some shake?

Be happy you failed the street-smart test:

They sell the glass pipe in gas stations under the guise of it containing an ornamental rose

Heh but it's something they learned outside of their "academy" (in their case, the gym), in society, and implemented it into their profession. Very well, I will add.

Hey guys.

For the sake of discussion (pursuing actual understanding of concept/avoiding petty semantics), we can substitute "street smarts" to "horse sense". They are terms for the same trait, but you don't hear anyone bashing 'horse sense', mostly because it's a term used by old people who could and will kick your ass with minimal effort (smartly)

Book Smart vs Street smart is the difference between knowing all the steps to changing a tire and actually being able to actually do it.

Hahaha. I respect anyone that uses terms from the times where horses were an integral part of labor.

Yeah, I am pretty sure book smarts is more like knowing all the steps to building a microprocessor or skyscraper. Noone thinks they have book smarts because they read how to change a tire. If they did they'd be the kind of person who brags about their street smarts.

Street smarts are things you learn on the streets. Book smarts are things you learn in books.

A lot of people like to pretend that street smarts are better than book smarts but that's just an excuse to explain away their failures at book smarts. Everyone should be book smart, public education is free. Not everyone should be street smart, it requires specific exposures that we don't all share.

Besides street smarts is subjective to environment while book smarts are universal.

Street smart rich kids are different from street smart middle class or street smart poor kids. Book smart kids are pretty much the same regardless of background.

This is one of the best answers to this question I've ever come across.

I'd add/clarify that part of "street smarts" or "common sense" is a combination of experience and value set.

My department didn't require a college degree. A GED was just fine. Some of the old-timers definitely had the attitude that having less formal education meant that they automatically had better judgement in practical things. Like a person couldn't possibly hold both things in one brain.

Case: I was brand new and we had a training day. There would be classroom time but also live grappling at our gym. In both portions we were to be in uniform. I got dressed and left my duty belt and weapon in my locker. "Whoa kid, where's your gun?" "Locked up. We have grappling." "What if something goes down and you don't have your gun?" "I can have my pick of any of yours, seeing as I'm the only one wearing a vest." Some of them dismissed me with a grumble. Some acknowledged my point. I'll let you guess which ones spent their days parked in a corner somewhere with a newspaper and which ones led specialized units and became captains to top of distinguished careers.

When I think streetsmarts, I think of somebody who is good at assessing things on the fly. Quickly understanding intentions, interpreting body language and voices, somebody who knows when shit is about to go down before other people do. They are very comfortable in situations where the booksmart guy is thinking "hey this isn't in the manual".

Street smarts are like retard strength.

I like this distinction. Street smarts has to do with psychology and is about quick decision making.

But that's why street smarts can be improved with book smarts. And experience and so on. You can be both and a lot of people are.

I do agree with the common opinion ITT though that people who say they are street smart, are usually just people who are uneducated and label themselves that to stroke their fragile egos.
