some say bill gates was street smart some say book smart some say

some say street smart is being able to teach yourself while book
smart is going to n instuitution to learn

but what do you define as street smart and book smart

Street smart includes experience vs. theory, and a lot of knowledge of human behavior.

'When someone says "I'm not book smart, I'm street smart"... All I hear is "I'm not real smart, I'm imaginary smart"...'

...and Mayberry is this way >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

street smarts can recognize danger and avoid it, book smarts can prepare your taxes
street smarts recognize that sometimes when a girl says no, she's actually interested and doesn't want to appear easy. Book smarts with that same girl has a philosophical conversation on the suffrage movement and gets no action.

Did you learn that in college?

It is generally used to describe raw intelligence vs. common sense... but it seems like more often than not, people claiming "street smart" are really just dumb people. Just because you aren't "book smart" doesn't mean you are "street smart".

Lol, so true. I've also noticed people claiming to have "common sense" tend to be dumb as well.

Street smarts are things you learn on the streets. Book smarts are things you learn in books.

A lot of people like to pretend that street smarts are better than book smarts but that's just an excuse to explain away their failures at book smarts. Everyone should be book smart, public education is free. Not everyone should be street smart, it requires specific exposures that we don't all share.

Besides street smarts is subjective to environment while book smarts are universal.

Street smart rich kids are different from street smart middle class or street smart poor kids. Book smart kids are pretty much the same regardless of background.

The problem is "street smart" is a term usually used by dumb who simply learned different things cause they didn't/couldn't learn from a book.

But assuming you're not, I think a street smart person is someone who is flexible with stuff. Like, a book smart person can catch on to something very quick if they have someone to explain it while a street smart person can connect the dots even without someone explaining it and in general they tend to be more creative, imo.

a real life example of street smart is someone i know
irish immigrant who is a multi millionaire through buying property around central london
he cant read or write at all
one of his little tricks is driving a ten year citroen to business meetings so he looks broke
the guy is polluted with money

thats an example of a "street" smart person because he has never read a book in his life

Street smarts is more of a practical cleverness in dealing with business and people. Book smart is more theoratical.

An extreme example is perhaps these former prison inmates who consult wall street type guys before they go to prison, trying not to get raped or stabbed. These guys can't move in those kind of places because they don't know how to act, even with all their intelligence.
I heard a story about this famous judge who went in a train and looked at somebody for a long time, and the guy opposite got so pissed that he hit um. And the judge didn't know what he did to piss the guy off. People with street smarts would know that some people see that stuff as provoking.

One of the first things I think if I have to pass through a known bad neighborhood is not to stare at someone. It's like a challenge to some people. To me it would be.

'Street smarts' are a protean, mythical concept employed solely by people who lose arguments on the internet in order to justify why they are unable to make any coherent points about the topic at hand, preferring instead to mock their opponent for having the audacity to have read up on the topic rather than just asserting things apropos of nothing.

Hope this helps.

IMO a big part of street smarts is knowing how not to draw attention to yourself to avoid conflict. I had a buddy that would stare at people wherever he went. When he was in white middle class neighborhoods it was fine, but if you're in Carson, Hawthorne, Harbor City, or Gardena that shit doesn't fly.

Street smarts is more situational and cultural. Book smarts is more formal education.

But "smart" really doesn't mean anything anyway, so it's all pretty stupid...

I always looked at it the same as the difference between wisdom and intelligence. The thread was a real eye opener for me because I didn't realize how many people were butthurt over the term "street smart".

I've always viewed those two terms to mean handicapped in some way. Essentially describing someone as the tallest midget or smartest retard. He who is street smart is acknowledging that he's not an intellectual. He who is book smart is acknowledging that he is socially inept. Hence why people often refer to others as 'X-smart' while people don't usually classify themselves in those categories. When people classify themselves as either of these, they're usually well behind the curve of what is acceptable in the adjacent option.

Street smarts = reading people and understanding their intentions, with the ability to mask your own intentions when needed.
