What did you all think of the movie Signs?

Yeah, the movie doesn't make a lot of sense. The whole "they were really demons" thing doesn't work. The "it was holy water" doesn't work. You can't magically insert actual acts of religion that weren't present in the movie to explain things. At no point was the water "made holy".

It was more like "journey over destination" kind of film. Enjoy the exciting unraveling of an otherwise stupid ending.

It kills it for me though. The movie is very clearly building towards something. Going back and watching it as some type of allegory doesn't work with the way the film was paced. And the water being "holy" makes no sense. It was water. And these stupid aliens came to a planet that had it in it's atmosphere.

It was implied that the daughter was holy, or like an angel. Hence, her water that she left all over the house was holy in the theory. She also says at one point "there's a monster outside can I get some water", which is adorable, but maybe she knows her water keeps bad things away. I'm not saying they were definitely demons, but I like the theory and I actually think it fits pretty well.

At no point did the daughter have any kind of magic power or any kind of religious authority she could use to make water holy. Every point that defends this theory has to go back and redefinie characters in ways that were never stated. That right there should tell you how solid it is.

I appreciate not suggesting it explicitly states it, but that's kind of my problem. People wanna act like it's an apparent theme in the movie. At best, it was the intent of the movie that the studio disagreed with. They wanted an alien movie in the end. M. Night may have wanted something that purely worked as allegory, but he didn't make a movie that achieves that.

I mean if we take that as what the movie actually was, what happened next? People went around filling up super soakers and just going "boom, this water is holy" to make sure the water was weaponized? Or could only true believers wield these super soakers of faith?

It's like a story that wanted to be a religious allegory and an alien invasion movie at the same time. In the middle of trying to have it's cake and eat it too, it accomplished neither.

I've never bothered to see Signs. Finding out about the ridiculous twist put me off it.

The little girl was holy. They even addressed it when Mel told her about the day she was born, and the nurses all said she looked like a little angel. If you thought that was a weird time for Mel to be telling her that, right when aliens were attacking, well you'd be right. So there is a significance to him telling her that.

You will argue, like you always do. But you will be wrong. Like you always are.

What?

I wanted it to be linear. An apocalyptic ending. If there's no sequel, then so be it. It couldn't be worse than what they did.

Ok, so you didn’t get the ending you wanted. All I’m saying is the ending was fine and didn’t not make any sense as other people have said. And even if it didn’t make sense, did it really take you out of the movie? I was entertained the whole time. I still watch that movie when it comes on.

I nearly walked out on it.

"Swing away!"

If you can remember it.

I rented Signs yesterday, and I’ve got to say that this movie was nothing special.

I was expecting a cool twist at the end of the film like with The Sixth Sense and The Village, but nope. No twist.

I believe I understood the movie. (The mother’s dying words were the right advice for what Merrill should do to kill the alien. Not a coincidence, a miracle.)

Well, I am surprised that this movie got such good reviews.

Please discuss what you liked/disliked about it.

I agree. It was definitely an overrated film in its day.

Hey, I said it's more like a "journey" movie. I enjoyed it, doesn't mean it can't be improved upon.

So holy water is just water poured by holy people? Or does it have to be blessed? In the movie, all people needed to do was bless the air, and the moisture in the atmosphere would’ve killed them? Or does it already count cause god poured it into the air? Shit makes no sense at all.

You will argue, like you always do. But you will be wrong. Like you always are.

And you will fail to address anything I say and just start talking about me. Like always.

I love that movie. I don’t give a fuck about the whole water “plot hole.” Everyone is like “why would they come to a planet that is 75% water if they are allergic to water?”

I can think of a bunch of reasons. Maybe other planets are not habitable for them due to a number of other reasons. Maybe they ran out of space gas and were like “fine, we’ll just have to risk it.” Maybe Earth in particular had some shit they need, like fat people or goats.

Yeah that complaint never bothered me. If you want to see a Shymalan movie with a plot points that make you cringe, see Lady in the Water.

Signs, on the other hand, I've always thought was an awesome movie. One of his best. The style to it is just great. Even if the film didn't have other redeeming elements there are some very effective uses of cinematography, music, editing in that film. It's just effectively done. One of the moments I always cite as just great from a theatergoing perspective is when Gibson seems like he's going to leave when he's checking up on the alien that Shammy told him he managed to trap in his house. He uses the knife to try to get a reflection of the other side of the door but sees nothing. He gets up as though he's given up but just as he's about to exit, he just walks back resolutely and looks under the door and BAM clawed hand coming right at him.

But the cool thing is it has other things to offer besides the technically solid horror/thriller elements. Gibson, Phoenix, Culkin, and Breslin all deliver very good performances in my opinion.

It's not a mind-blowing twist or anything, but it was a nice sense of Gibson's arc coming full circle. Plus, Night had that problem after the Sixth Sense where everyone expected him to deliver a shocking twist each time out. It doesn't work like that.
I will say this, as great as the ending of the Sixth Sense was, I was more shocked by the ending to Unbreakable. That reveal where we see and its been 18 years I'm not using spoiler tags but will warn DON'T Read if you didn't see it

Mr. Glass was orchestrating those horrific attacks so that he could find someone like Willis- that just really messed with my mind as a fifteen year old first seeing that film.
