What did BJ PENN do that many people consider him so great?

Because I'm still trying to figure it out, after all these years.

You had to be watching the sport when he beat Matt Hughes. It was mindblowing. Like Conor beating Lawler would be. Fighting at LHW, LW, and everywhere in between against the best guys in the world (and doing well) meant it was really easy to cheer for the guy's warrior spirit. Things got weird when he brought his mom in to testify in court that he was a good guy.

sometimes it takes a dumbass to start one of the most epic bjpenn appreciation threads ever

Most casual mma fans will tell you he's great and all that
But dont buy into it

He's at best a gatekeeper with 16wins and 10losses

Couldnt even beat an up and coming Lyoto Machida, got embarassed by Dias, Edgar, Gsp and is still sour about it to this date

I didn't even know his record was that bad, I just remember seeing him fight and not really being impressed.I recall him losing every few matches. I always get sick on my stomach when somebody uses the term "motivated BJ PENN"..."motivated bj penn vs grizzly bear", "motivated bj penn vs werdum/velasquez in a 2 on 1 match"..

Since people that say this usually just do a rough check of his record and conclude he was average - it's not who he beat, it's who he beat at the time, guys that were #1 and he made them look easy. Yeah, he had alot of losses but some took balls to risk which most fighters wouldn't have done to tarnesh their legacy. It just made his all that much greater for true mma fans. Sure, 20-0 in your own weight class is cool but to go all over the fucking place fighting the real Who's-who in mma at all time makes you something else.

Move up in weight and make Hughes look like a complete amateur.

He went of from 155 and destroyed Mark Hughes at 170 taking his belt like it was a walk in the park.

Then he came back to 155 destroying people

Are you new to life?

He won a 170 belt and defended 155.

Is that easy to do? If so why haven't more people won 2 belts or even 1?

Watching a small LW choke out the ... at the time greatest WW in the world had something to do with it.

Most title defensive at LW I believe.

Was a finisher.

His skills were far ahead of his time.

His only flaws were that he relied on his natural skill/ability rather than hard work , size advantage and gameplan like other greats do.

Both Henderson and Edgar are tied with Penn with 3 title defences.

He was a fuckin savage.

If you've been trying to figure this out for years - you've got fucking issues.

He won 2 major titles and moved around in weight a lot. BJ's legacy is more about moving around in weight and titles than in wins and losses, much like Randy Couture.
