Because I'm still trying to figure it out, after all these years.

Fight really well

Win 2 belts in two different weight classes?? Something GSP, Anderson, Aldo, Frankie, Mac, Jon Jones and whoever else hasn't done it. Fought anyone anytime anywhere, he was doing what Macgregor was doing long before everyone thought it was cool.

He choked out the best LW (Gomi) and the best WW (Hughes) in the world, and was one of the first truly well rounded new breed of fighters.

He pretty much had the mentality of fighting anyone at any weight class at any time. I mean, he fought Machida. He had the balls to not really care so much about his record but just took on all comers.

He got alot of respect for doing that. He didn't always win and I think people mistake that for being the reason why people consider him so great.

watching fat bj penn mount lyoto machida is a thing of beauty

Same as McGregor - win some big fights, talk a lot of shit, and project yourself as the best.

Won belts in two weight classes. Beat Matt Hughes twice. Went up to fight Loyoto Machida.

Got a black belt in BJJ in 1 year. Won mundials as the first american to do so and only the second foreigner to do so. Blasted through the UFC lightweight division and even catching Pulver in an armbar and getting a tap with half a second left of the round. Blasted through Matt Hughes the WW champ like he was nothing. Was both LW and WW UFC champion. Amazingly gifted athlete hence the name The Prodigy.

All true. But let’s be honest, a large portion of his fans, or at least the louder portion, wants everyone to think he was the greatest fighter to ever grace the canvas.
