International What country is doing things right?

I mean, can you really pick and choose which authoritarian regime is good and bad?

Tbh if you put me in charge of shit I'd probably be authoritarian on a lot of things. I think it comes down to what you're authoritarian about.

What are the issues with Switzerland? That's always been my go-to answer to this.

They're running out of money to pay for their social services like welfare and retirement for their citizens.

Hard to say

But there’s something to be said about Trump’s pristine and quiet Southern border and to think it’s only the beginning. We’re starting in the right path so this might be question better asked in a year.

I can tell you right now who is disqualified. Any European country, and with extreme prejudice..the United Kingdom

Unironically the US.

People that don't travel a lot have this very skewed view of the world. I've been to so many countries and i never cared that some have better living standards than others. that's only for domesticated adults, for whom the highest you can look forward in life is a comfortable bedroom. that isn't a measure of much except stagnation.

it's nice to have, but if it's the end goal, you will end up like europe, who's out of ideas and whose only long term plan is to somehow pay the pensions of the boomers. that's it, there's nothing else here. africa and latin america and most of asia are a bunch of shitholes, japan is killing itself, china is going to be ambientally choking the entire world with it's economic might but there's nothing really inspiring in their effort, so far at least.

life may not be amazing for all americans.
But it's still the only country in the world that has the faustian drive, that attracts people that have larger than life dreams. Go to Mars, go to the stars, become immortal, write your name in diamond on the Halley comet. @Deorum is probably one of the few people in this forum that understands what that means.

Maybe some day this drive will move to china, but i don't think it will under the current political format.

Cant think of any country i would rather live in than Denmark

Anyway Singapore seems to be doing pretty well at the moment.
the world's smallest "country"

is kind of small, and like saying orange county is doing well, probably cant scale to other countries, and technically not wrong

Fuck, i went to Denmark a few months ago, and i really wanted to end up at Aalborg to see that dune-covered lighthouse. didn't happen, saw the Esbjerg lighthouse instead which is like 3 meters tall. eh, good enough. Fano island is amazing. i also didn't see the sun for almost 4 weeks which fucked me up.

i can't even understand how that would work. i'd probably get a bit depressed. at the end of the Denmark weeks all i wanted to do is sleep. was waking up, had some breakfast, then slept until noon. basically my day started at 14:00 and went on until who knows when. and i was on the water a lot, which sucks out all your energy anyway since it's that kind of wet cold that goes to the bones.

Universal Healthcare isn't free... Its Tax Payer funded and Canada has far higher taxes than even California....

Meh... What's the wait time for healthcare in Canada again?

UK?

I had to get hernia surgery last November and it tooks 3 week from initial appointment to the day of surgery.

The US System has issues... big issues. And it got much worse after Obamacare and premiums exploded by 3x-4x more. But Universal Healthcare is a fucking disaster.

No, premiums did not go up like that under ACA.

The US already spends a shit ton on healthcare and with really poor outcomes to show for it. Yes the US population is complicated but we should be getting better results for the amount we spend.

We have a very unhealthy population. If you would combine all the money spent on private healthcare/insurance with all the government spending there would almost certainly be ample funds to pay for an organized system that worked for everybody. By organized system I mean regional, managed care health systems.

Many private insurance companies have an overhead above 10% while medicare is something like 2% overhead. The amount of insurance companies and insurance plans is ridicules, why have all this redundancy? The American healthcare system would save at least 15% off the top on redundant management simply by consolidating.

Hospital operations would be WAY easier with single payer too. Registration, billing and authorizations are very expensive for any facility. It is ridicules that even small hospitals have to wade through the red tape and billing preferences of over 70 different insurance contracts.

Sorry about your hernia, but three week wait ain't terrible depending on how bad it was. Did your surgeon use a robot?

While I agree our health care system (Canada) isn't always perfect, its nowhere near as bas as shown above. And no one goes into crippling debt because they have to pay for it, or dies because they can't afford it. Could it be improved? Fuck yes. But is it as bad as the US model? Fuck no.
I am currently in the emergency room in Edmonton with a friend who is bleeding badly and we have been here 15 hours.

US. A Global leader in next gen technology R&D. One of the best PPP. Among the highest pay for stem professionals. Best cost of housing on income to sq ft ratio. Low taxes. Yes they don't give much a fuck of the shit dreg classes but I favor that policy

Everyone's criticizing the US, but I can't name a country that is doing things right. I used to think of Switzerland but I watched the Pete Santinello travel video on Youtube and saw they have their own very serious problems over there. So now, I can't really think of a single country.

What do you mean by doing things right?

Compared to other wealthy countries, the U.S. has a lower life expectancy, with Americans dying younger than their counterparts in countries like Japan, Switzerland, and Canada.

Here's a more detailed comparison:
  • Lower Life Expectancy:
The U.S. life expectancy is significantly lower than the average for people in other large, wealthy countries.
    • In 2022, the U.S. life expectancy was 77.4 years, ranking it 49th in the world, behind countries like Cuba, Estonia, and Saudi Arabia.
  • Japan and Hong Kong have the longest life expectancies at birth (almost 85 years), while the US performs relatively poorly among wealthy countries, with a life expectancy of 79 years.

  • Life expectancy in the UK is 81 years.

  • Canada has a life expectancy of 82.3 years.

Homicide rate of G7 countries 2000-2021, by country

Published by S. Galan, Jan 23, 2025
The United States had, by far, the highest homicide rate of the G7 countries between 2000 and 2021. In 2021, it reached 6.81 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, an increase from 6.52 in 2020 and 5.07 in 2019. By comparison, Canada, the G7 nation with the second highest homicide rate, had 2.07 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2021. Out of each G7 nation, Japan had the lowest rate with 0.23 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.

It's not a disaster everywhere. Canada is just fucking it up as are we at the present but the NHS was great for years.

Many countries with the best healthcare in the world have universal healthcare systems.
Until you overload your country with additional bodies and not enough resources to maintain what you had.

It's very basic math that a lot of our leaders are having serious trouble with right now.
