What books are you reading?

Shadow Ticket by Thomas Pynchon. Almost done.

It's not his best (that would be the masterpiece, Mason and Dixon), but hey, the guy is 90 years old. Still very entertaining.

Started the series last year in November. I got about halfway through Disquiet Gods earlier this year and got burned out, so I went and read something else. Have yet to go back. I’m planning to start it over and then finish out the series. It’s been a really great read so far, and I’m excited to see how it all wraps up. I’ve managed to avoid all spoilers, which honestly makes the anticipation even greater.

did you make it to chapter 39?
that is a mindfuck chapter that flips everything

disquiet gods is amazing and demon in white is transcendent
but shadows upon time, the weapons and demiurge are so cool i cant rate it lower
 
i forgot to mention essays
earlier this year i read alot of DFW, his essays are amazing.
recently i have been reading Hitchens and Orwells essays
in particular hitchens collection for the sake of argument have been quite interesting, every essay is a mini-lesson on history, that i was ignorant of

I don’t remember anything earth shattering, so I don’t think so. I mean I knew Cassandra was coming up. Cielcin acting in a different way with a certain someone?? “New” Segaras ? Maybe that? I need a recap on the series again. Might have to go back further to remember it all so it can properly hit at the finale. It’s a bit of a haze right now.

Interesting to see you're ranking. Started these books from all of the high praise, and found the first book a bit slow and didn't seem like much happened. Good to see from you're ranking it was the weakest of the bunch. Second picked things up quite a bit and will definitely stick with it.
 
Finished up book 10 of the Spiral Wars, Precursor.

Great addition to the series. Felt a little like a detour from the main arc, but still moved the plot along quite a bit. I think there are only 1 or 2 left in the series and will be sad to see it wrap up. It's been a great ride until know.
 
Just finished "There Is No Antimemetic Division" yesterday. Some pretty cool concepts, but the latter half wasn't as strong, and the ending felt like a typical Deux Ex Machina.

many people didnt think the 1st was earth (sun?) shattering. I did enjoy it. It was probably a 7 / 10. but all the rest of the series are 9/10

personally i prefer liminal weird fiction to vast save the world/universe grand adventures. So that is one thing that really got me about the series is all the weirdness mixed with scifi and a heaping of religion/philosophy.

the other thing is the first and second were Ruocchio's first two books as an author. I do feel like he fixed a lot of pacing and organization stuff as he matured as an author

I like the character work since my go-to science fiction is generally of the “hard” variety that is more about ideas and science. The first book was very meh for me, but, glad I stuck around. Only wish there was more science to it all. I really thought they would have went more in on the Romans in space thing. I thought it would be more prevalent or something. Just some ginger emperor really. Can’t wait to read his demise, since they’ve mentioned it for a few thousand pages.

The more I read your post and thought about mine, a lot of it is coming back lol

the emperor is a G, but that doesnt come till later. there is so much to the world to the explore. but the court politics is some of the strongest stuff. After finishing it, I wush we got.to see more of Jadd
There are a lot.of nuggets in it. Hadrian comes from Delos. Delos in Greece was the home of the Delphi, the oracle. He can speak to the quiet, an oracle himself.
the last book starts off semi-hard (morning wood if you would) and it is one of the things that really drove me through it. The book is 900+ pages and i finished it about 4 days. in the beginning Hadrian has the Demiurge and they go into (and use) the aresenal. with a multi-pov battle.
think AI models fighting and humans acting as the intermediaries.

I think the pacing is what I really struggled with. Multiple chapters would go by and nothing would happen. Glad to see it gets better. Enjoying it enough to continue with the series.
 
Beat the Reaper was a fun, fast read.

I just started this book today. Sci Fi genre.

Children of Time is fantastic. Adrian gets a bit too into his personal politics in many of his other books, but COT doesn’t have that issue. Or maybe the issue is not as prevalent a theme, like in some of his other works. Yet to read the sequel or anything yet, but COT is more in line to what I like reading in science fiction.
 
Might be considered cheating, but got a free audible subscription and some credits. Picked up the first Dungeon Crawler book and Technology of the Gods(science of the ancients), which I’ll start tonight or tomorrow. Seems interesting, and free…

Awesome. I'm about 100 some pages in. I plan on reading after I knock out a recertification course for work.
