What books are you reading?

I stopped half way through. Excellent characters, but i did not find the story engaging at all. i need a good story to get invested into the blade itself did not have that.

The Red rising series on the other hand was excellent. great characters with an engaging plot.
Thanks for the input. That saddens me, but will push through to the end for friendship's sake lol.

I didn't care for Red Rising. Felt a little too similar to many other series, and almost YA. Yea, I'm a bit snobbish about things like that. Just find it harder and harder to read about youngins, or having the main be a youth. Now I got some clouds to yell at.

First book is pretty juvenile compared to the other books, but i quite liked the plot and characters that were set up. However the second book onwards really elevate the story and it becomes really mature, dark and graphic.

I recently finished this one, selected at random from the new section at my local library.

Evidently several acquaintances read and loved it. I really liked the concepts, but the execution was way too focused on a young woman's self-involved problems, including a trope filled romance, most frequently addressed in the bitchiest manner possible. I was constantly on the verge of putting it away without finishing it. I wanted dragon-riding, sword fights, and magic. I got all those things, but there was also a lot of nonsensical military traditions and unrealistic depictions of romance. The boss-bitch who still has to be rescued constantly.

Reading this, I liked it even less than I thought.

The Blade Itself takes some time to get going getting the world building going. If you enjoy the characters I recommend reading some of the stand alone books in the series as they are self contained and not as much world building.

The first one Best Served Cold was great and set up kind of like a heist caper and is my favorite of the stand alone books. This book is also getting a movie, so if there is one to read, it’s this one.

Also the Red Rising books lose their borderline YA feel after the first book. The second book feels a lot more mature. As the series continues some of the books get really dark. Book 5, Dark Age, was brutal. It felt super heavy in tone and definitely not for kids.

So the stand alone books were first?? In that world's timeline?

I don't mind world building. I'm a science fiction boy, so very used to that. Heist caper, hmmm. That sounds nice.

I want to say Best Served Cold is like 10 years past the end of the first trilogy. Characters are referenced, but you really don’t need to know who they are. I say heist caper, but it only plays out like one, rather than try to steal something, they are elaborate plans to assassinate people who wronged the lead lead character, hence the name Best Served Cold.

If you’re a sci-fi guy, you should check out The Spiral Wars books. Currently reading through them now and they are great. The Revelation Space books are good too, but pretty hard sci-fi and I know that’s not everyone’s thing.

Oh, Hard science fiction is exactly my thing. Egan, Bear, Reynolds.... That sort. Revelation Space was great, and Redemption Arc was better. Have yet to read the rest. Will also look into Spiral Wars. Thanks!

Hey, does the Blade Itself books remain engaging in your opinion? Reading the first now. Not a fantasy fan really, so a lot of the tropes get to me, but I find Glotka to be a great character, and the main reason I keep going.
I think his stuff is pretty great if you like grimdark stuff. Haven't read the Red Rising stuff mentioned above.

Great expectations by Charles Dickens

I’m currently reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It’s kind of a tough read, so it’s taking a while.

The Seuss, The Whole Seuss, And Nothing But The Seuss - A Visual Biography by Cohen

They drag a bit sometimes but overall I really enjoyed them. Glokta is definitely the star of the show but I also liked some of the other characters and the whole cynical writing tone is totally my thing. I'd say that trilogy is pretty stable, it doesn't fall off or anything but also no reason to push through if you don't really feel like it.

I think there is a notable improvement in his 2nd trilogy (Age of Madness) where the dialogue is sharper and pacing better, but the characters aren't quite as strong. Not sure which I liked better overall.

Half way through.
Very over the top like "what the fuck can go wrong now" but incredibly gripping and fun to read

Vince Flynn Mitch Rapp Series. Don't like Kyle Mills follow up style.

Finished the first, and then borrowed the second. Thought it would be darker, to be honest. Liked the first enough to go on though. Intro to the Bloody Nine, and the band of named men towards the end, got me really intrigued. Always been a sucker for a group of traveling/fighting men, and the situations that arise.

Holly by Stephen King.

If you are a long time constant reader I'd advise to read a few reviews of this book before you buy it. My review is not good as I'm not going to finish it. It's the first book I'm ever going to take back to costco and get a refund. However I can see why a percentage of King fans will probably really like it.

King has that major fuck you money and he's old and gone off the rails and has decided to say fuck you to half his readers. even if you are on his side does anyone want to relive the topic he wants to constantly talk about. I mean I know that answer, a lot will and he's going to make a ton of money. not from me though
