What am i not getting with Joe Rogan and crew' as comedians?

Jesus christ, that was savage. He just, like, imploded.

The funny thing is this was all a dunk competition with his friend. He had already won before this. Then they were like hey maybe you can dunk another .5 inches or something like that. Just for fun to see if he could do it. That's when his body gave out on him.

Normand is pretty funny, but his shtick is a bit 2 dimensional, I'm not sure I'd want to watch an entre special of his.
You don't.

I was falling for Normand based off short clips of really good jokes. Then I watched a 30-minute thing and it wasn't all killer, but still pretty good.

Then I watched his full special on Netflix... I wanted to like it, but it really shows how formulaic his jokes are. It felt like 75% of his jokes were comparison jokes.

Like when you take two things and point out similarities.

"My mother in law is like a bowling ball... They're both heavy, loud, and it's embarrassing when your fingers get stuck inside them."

(Not an actual Marc Normand joke, just an example of what he does).

That's a pretty decent joke. You should get onto the rogan podcast.

Joe Rogan and the crew of his which consists of Tom Segura, Bert Kreisher, Schaub, Callen etc. They are comedians, yet they just aren't particularly funny from the standup i have seen of theirs. Does anyone else here find them less funny than they first imagined?

Rogan has his moment but often goes off the rails when he is trying to prove how manly he is during his standup. Schaub sucks. Segura is like a B/B+. Kreisher is hard to take in large amounts. Callen isn't that funny. The reason they are part of Rogan's crew is not because they are good but because they have a built up following. It is like a Linkedin Pod group with everyone liking each others shit. There is a youtube channel called Dry Bar where people do stand up in front of people without alcohol. The surprising thing is that there are a lot of cats that are pretty decent. There just aren't that many people that are great consistently and most comedians pushed forward are better at advertising themselves or were gassed by an organization. Rogan, Kriesher, and Segura have enough to be road comedians. Segura is the better of the three by far.

I saw rogan live and he is actually pretty funny, but chappelle went on afterwards and mopped up the floor with him obviously. From the other guys you listed the only funny one is Segura, but again he is not on the same level as Stanhope, chappelle, bill burr etc…

lots of comedians these days get famous from podcasts where they actually are pretty amusing, but standup comedy is a whole different animal.

Yeah i suppose that's the thing isn't it. Stand up is hard. I respect anyone that does it as it can be rough when you have a tough crowd and pushing through.

I actually love Normand, Dillon, and Gillis. The rest are meh at best. Though Callen does a great job at playing the whipping post on podcasts. Good wingman.

I'm not sure if Adam Ray is anything to do with Rogan, but i find his Dr Phil impressions are funny.

Opinions… I loved “Out to Lunch” though. And I would personally like to have a beer with the guy. He doesn’t stop.

Not a fan of any of their so-called "comedy". Rodney Dangerfield's worst day of stand up (using zero curse words) CRUSHES all of them combined.

ex. Rodney Dangerfield gets No Respect, No Respect At All.
Rodney argues with his wife about sex and money.
She says he's no good and he said she charges to much.

Bill Burr and Greg 'grapefruit' Fitzsimmons are the main ones that have been consistently funny on the podcast. And Burr has been less funny in recent years due to his wife's influence.

It could be worse. Female comedians making feminism man hating jokes or jones about thru period.gross!

Nah that's his best friend. This is Tom Segura in one of the funniest injuries I've ever seen.

old fatass trying to ball <Dany07>

that's as bad as women trying to drive..................

I do agree, segura is a funny dude, and his material is carefully curated, however, his podcast is kind of lame, and that fat guy he hangs with is terrible.

I don't really judge a comedian until I see them live. Just watching a special they all pretty much suck to me

His podcast has started to grow on me but I don't watch it much cause I'm not that big of a fan of it either. Jimmy Carr was on recently though and was roasting the shit out of his wife which was funny. Even Tom couldn't stop himself from losing it every single time.

Yea Bert K. I'm not a huge fan of. I tried to watch his move recently but I don't know it just wasn't good and his acting was barely passable.

1- comedy is EXTREMELY hard.

The world only gives a shit about maybe 3 comics at any given time that are in their prime and they probably worked 30 years to get there. Fewer yet can continue to produce quality stand up comedy specials over and over again.

So if you have seen peak performances of Chappelle, Burr, CK, Carlin, Robin Williams, Chris Rock, Etc, the vast majority of comics won't hold up in comparison.

2- some of the guys you mention are mainly famous from JRE and their comedy "success" is heavily driven by their JRE fame.

3- JRE is EXTREMELY influential and the insane amount of views it gets is enough to have a life changing effect on comedians public image and career trajectory.

As such guys like Kreischer, who is not funny imo, have crafted "comedy careers" consisting 90% or so of riding Joe Rogans wave, or being a fun guy to hang out with and as such Rogan basically put them in his little entourage and they squeezed out careers of that. It's the truth. For example Brendan Schaub has 2 comedy specials, I think one was on Netflix and he literally would get booed off the stage at most amateur open mics.

Similar phenomenon to 'istagram models' or social media "influencers"

These people are famous for being famous, not for contributing anything of value to society or entertainment. Just a weird side effect of the weird world and social media culture we happen to be stuck in.
