What about a roped octagon?

Fighting in a "cage" is one of the reasons people think so badly of MMA and UFC. They think "fight until the death" thunderdome type of events because of that. But the octagon is the trademark and an iconic thing of the UFC so we can't get rid of it. What about... a roped octagon?

So instead of the cage, we would have an 8-sided boxing ring. That would keep the iconic octagon alive yet give UFC a great push forward when it comes to acceptance. It would immediately bring a more civilized feeling to the fight, yet keeping the traditions alive. It would quickly be accepted as an "okay" sport in many new states as well.

This is PERFECT! Except for the ugly things behind all the posts, they should just be made durable and strong without it showing outside like that. It would be so much easier to follow the fights from the audience if it were like that. Also, that looks a lot more "acceptable" than a caged octagon in the eyes of the people allowing or disallowing sports.

True that, stomps and soccer kicks should be allowed. I'm also an advocate of no gloves actually. But the people making the decisions about allowing sports and what's "okay" arent.

It seems to me you don't really understand why UFC became so big. It has little to do with the fact that they changed a ring to an octagon.

OP is right, also if a fighter goes mental and doesn't stop hitting the other guy after the ref calls the fight it will be easier for people around the octagon to jump in there and break the fight up. I wonder how many people have been beaten to death before anyone was able to break up the fight.
