So the guy whos running gym is purple belt and he sandbaging everyone els until he gets higher belt. I mean he will not allow promote any one to purple until he gets brown. What would you do if you feel geting sandbaged this way. When rolling with the guy you get better of him half of the times.. basicly you on same level as he is but he higher ranked just only because he is running the gym

And no switching to another gym not an option

As a purple belt, is he actually promoting people or is a black belt handling the promotions? I'm not sure of a hard and fast rule, if one exists, regarding instructors who aren't black belts promoting up to his own rank, but I've never personally heard of a purple or brown belt with his own school promoting somebody to his rank; whoever the instructor is under would usually do so, in my experience. That's not really "sandbagging" if that's the case.

Promotions made by black belt who visits academy 1-2 times a year.. he baraly remembers faces of people that he promotes so the purple belt just tells him who he should promote

That doesn't sound too weird for most affiliate schools, but there are some other factors that may be in play. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it.

What do you expect him to do? He doesn't have "the qualifications" to promote to his rank. Even the most lenient gyms won't let a blue belt promote someone to blue. A purple to promote to purple. A brown to brown.

Most gyms can't promote unless they're a black belt them self.

It sounds like you're complaining about a situation that no one around you can control.

If you're trying to get better at Jiu Jitsu and you are, you don't have to worry about anything else.

If you wanna tell people you're a purple belt, there are websites for that.

I think you didnt get my point.. he will not tell black belt to promoto some 1 to purple until that point when he will recieve brown. So basicly there if he is blue there is no more blues in the gym. If he is purple there be no purples until he gets brown

Ah. Okay. That makes sense.

I guess you're just going to have to wait until he gets promoted. :(

Best thing you can do is help him on his way. Your belt is now attached to his.

How long have you had your blue belt?
If changing schools is not an option it kind of is what it is. If there is only one or two belt promotions a year you are probably within a year of being promoted if you already feel like you are on the same level. I would say you should focus on being better than him. Work on being better so he knows you know what's up. Just roll

From my recollection of a similar situation, you can promote up to one rank below your current rank if you have no head BB. Always better to have a BB obviously but sometimes things are remote or not obtainable easily.

That's about what I recall as well.

Can any of the held back blues tap dis fool? If not, maybe they are at the correct level.

If There is a student that is smoking sensei on the regular then yeah, that boy need to get purp'd.

that boy needs to get grandaddy purp'd

How many of these blues who have been sandbagged medalled at Mundials or nogi worlds?

a purple belt is not supposed to be promoting people but most standards iirc. you need to be two ranks above what your promoting to, i.e. brown can promote up to blue, and only black can promote purples and up.

as long as you are happy with what you are learning i dont think its a big issue. you are there for the skills not the belt. everybody in such a hurry for black and then what?? ppl give you some nice words, a couple handshakes/high 5s and nothing much changes.

If the decision to promote is just arbitrarily made my some useless purple belt who can't even beat blue belts, no matter what colour your belt is it's not a true belt even if it's a black belt handing it out.

We've had purple belts come in to grapple from some of these affiliate schools who have spent thousands of dollars going to see all these seminars of the 'big guy' and belong to one of their franchises run by some lower belt, and they were getting smoked by our four stripe white belts.

There is just such a huge difference between schools run by legitimate black belts who actually compete or have competed and these franchise/affiliate schools.

You're complaining about a situation that the purple belt can't control that much. It makes no sense for him to tell the black belt to promote guys to purple when he obviously doesn't know you guys.

You may not be happy, but he's the head instructor. I'd say it's all at his discretion

you should challenge him next time the BB is there, if you want your purple belt that bad

Better yet, challenge the black belt!
