Mark Muñoz also beat Maia btw. I dont know if he was overhyped but he was no slouch. Shortly after Maia completely outclassed Jon Fitch in his own game.
 
Ah, this takes me back. This was one of the biggest meltdowns on Sherdog. We got to see people go through the stages of grief in real time. The pbb thread was legendary. Hope that was archived.
 
I think Weidman should have be Anderson's final MMA fight instead of Sakurai. Now I will never know who the better fighter is and will never be sure if I can say that Weidman is still my boy.
 
You can call it careless, showboating, underestimating etc. but this was strategy.

We seen it in a lot of Silva's fights. He was primarily a counter striker (and one of the best) but a counter striker needs an aggressive opponent. When Silva would get a tentative or patient opponent he would behave like this to entice them to attack more and open themselves up. It is a strategy that worked well for him many times. Don't discredit Chris because it didn't work on him. Chris was prepare for it and made him pay.

Silva also did next to nothing but cruise/scrape by in that fight. Landing 61 strikes over 25 minutes in a purely standup fight is embarrassing. Get a clue. Weidman also took the Maia fight on 11 days notice and still clearly won. Again, get a clue.

People forget how good Weidman was in his prime. Great grappling and striking plus an iron chin. He ate some huge shots during his title run

I'm actually a fan of Maia. I think he should have been at ww his whole career. At ww he seemed to be able to get the takedown more often.

Maybe, he barely cut weight at 185

But to be fair he struggled to take down some of the hardest guys to take down at 185 as Muñoz or Weidman, the same way he struggled vs the guys with best TDD at 170 as Usman, Woodley or Belal.

Silva never proved he was better than Travis "Michael Jordan of BJJ" Lutter. It was well known he had an infamously bad weight cut and was basically carried to the scales. Still didn't stop him dominating the first round against Silva.

Who knows how a healthy weight cut Lutter would have done.
