Weidman never proved he's better than Silva.

God, I would love to be able to just throw a fight once or twice in a row and go "Yeah, but you never proved you were better!" and run off into the distance laughing

Hallman beat Hughes twice, he just had his number despite Hughes having a much more decorated mma career.

Well how do you define better? If Fighter A loses to all fighters ranked 1-10, but always beats Fighter B who in turn always beats fighters ranked 1-10, is Fighter A better than Fighter B? Both Silva-Weidman fights ended weirdly, but both were wins for Weidman. Silva was out of his prime, but I think someone like Weidman would be a very difficult fight for prime Silva and would beat him more often than he would lose. However, Silva remained at the top for a very long time, while Weidman only remained at the top for 1-2 years.

I'd say Silva had the better career and taking into account all fights, was the better fighter, but Weidman had Silva's number.

Silva was the MW champ at 38 prior to losing the belt. The Chris hasn't even fought in the UFC since being 38, let alone being the champ and top of the division. Silva was absolutely better. You gotta give Chris credit for catching Silva on his decline, but someone was always going to do this. But prime for prime, Silva all day. Silva murks Izzy too.

Ya he did. Nothing dubious about the 1st fight. I think he proved he was better than Silva that night. When I saw that 1st fight live, I thought Silva looked in trouble even before he started "showboating". I always thought he was trying to bluff Weidman into being discouraged but Weidman wasn't buying the mind games, kept following up and pressing and we saw what happened.

Silva knew the risks and showboated. I am a huge silva nut hugger, but even I can acknowledge that fighting is a mental game above all else. it's also about taking risks for rewards.

anderson was 38. old enough to know better.

the anderson from like 30-35 smashes Weidman over and over though

yeah yeah yeah, Weidman never proved he's better than Silva, Silva proved that he is worse than Weidman.

That fight ended in a ko but doesn't count because....

Silva was losing the fist fight before the KO. Weidman had a great run and was a tough out for anyone. He was big, strong, OK stand-up and very good ground skills. Top 6 - 7 runs in UFC Middleweight history:

I often wonder what happened to this great fighter to cause a massive decline at a relatively young age…

Weidman was always gonna be a bad matchup. Idk if he woud win without showboating and freak leg kick, but it was never gonna be easy. Better grappler than Chael Sonnen any day of the week and we have seen how that fight went for the majority of it.

Silva was past his prime in their first fight.
Silva lost the first fight due to showboating and not taking the fight seriously.
Silva lost the second fight due to a freak leg kick.

These three factors make Weidman's wins against Silva dubious at best.
I still contend that a focused, prime Silva circa 2010 destroys Weidman.

Agreed, more or less. What got me questioning it was the Lyoto fight, but he was in a downfall too.

I'll never give someone credit for deliberately getting a KO because the combatant allowed it. Silva deserved it, but I would never feel like a badass from it.

The leg kick one...shit, weidman had good moments, but let's not forget that pillow puncher chael wobbled silva in their first fight. Not exactly nuts to see silva in a war. Then what happened? Freak leg injury. And yes, it is a freak because of times its happened.

Then, weidman oddly just got worse, fast.

What's REALLY odd is that freak injury happened to him! Cant remember, but was his opponent spouting that HE prepared to do that? Likely not.

Anderson knew Weidman was as good or better than him in jiu jotsu and wrestling so he was really short on options seeing as how Weidman was also more than competent in the stand up.

Weidman knocked him out and called him a piece of shit.

Imagine how bad Silva must be for losing to a Weidman who already had a boatload of surgeries and lost his home before the fight happened

Lol

Weidman also famously refused to sign the standard #1 contender/champion contract the UFC offers guys ahead of title fights so that they get paid more for the title fight and if they win their contract automatically switches to additional champion pay built in. AKA locked in by the UFC.

Instead Chris said nah and fought Silva on his existing $24K/24K contract as he was banking on winning regardless and then coming to the negotiating table as the existing champion who'd defeated GOAT Silva that the UFC now needed to pay to get to fight again.

Well son of a bitch. Next fight his purse is $200K/200K.

It was SIlva's. He denied Weidman a clear win by goofing off like a clown. I'm glad he lost that first fight - I just wish we could have seen a focused Silva.
We did see serious Silva. Spoiler alert: he was dropped in the first round and handily lost it. Then he was finished in the second round. He didn't win one moment of that fight and was serious enough that he stood there praying for a good long while before stepping into the Octagon.
