Why was Captain Davis' Online Bud thread deleted? Are you guys just deleting any thread where the old OTers are hanging out? What's the deal?

Hey there,

That thread should have been deleted much earlier and honestly, right away. It was left up as I believe your off topic forum was down so some of the mods were allowing the conversation to continue until it resumed. It ultimately got to be too much though with it's content and was closed.

Here are a couple noted rules in Mayberry, as well as a link to a very detailed post regarding Mayberry guidelines in contrast to OT style posting.

Off-Topic leniency for flaming does not apply here in Mayberry or anywhere else on the board

OT-Style Posts and Threads: Don't do them. You will be banned or dubbed, threads and posts will be deleted. Do not waste our time and your own

http://forums.sherdog.com/forums/71931583-post7.html

That thread you noted contained a myriad of posts that violated rules against Mayberry's requirements. Again, it probably should have been removed at the outset, but all the mods that everyone disdains in here are actually trying to find ways to help balance order in the wake of the OT being removed, including things like allowing a thread to proceed when the other forum is down momentarily even though it's against the rules in reality.

We want to make the time on Sherdog positive for everyone, including those who spent most their time in the off topic. But doing so means those in the OT will have to change their posting habits and acclimate when visiting here because there is no longer a forum in this community for that type of behaviour. As noted, a few mods have tried to allow some leniency, but ultimately the lines just get too crossed as evidenced in the very thread you noted.

If you're simply looking for a thread like the 'Online Bud' one where you can hang out and flame, reference trending one liners, insult other members and moderators in jest and angst, etc, you're best to use your other forum in that regard because such an outlet no longer exists here. I'm not saying that in ignorance nor am saying there's anything wrong with enjoying that type of dialogue. We housed such a forum for a very long time, so obviously there's a market for it. That said, there is no longer a forum within this particular community that befits that nature, so when you're wanting to converse in such fashion, it will have to be elsewhere.

As we continue to adjust without the OT here, you'll undoubtedly still find some inconsistencies. For example, Konster had his thread deleted yesterday that contained off topic style conversation almost immediately and with no regard to the topic as written. As such it was removed. He was upset by it, and while I explained the reasoning, it wasn't well received. It's a bit confusing because the 'Online Bud' thread was open with the exact same type of posting, where as his thread was removed.

This then is where the inconsistencies are discovered. The obvious resolve would have been to just close both threads down on the immediate since neither are Mayberry befitting. But as I earlier eluded to, it was known that the other forum was down for a duration, so a few in the booth decided to allow that one thread to continue in the interim. They probably should have just shut it down, but they're trying to make this a place enjoyable for all while balancing within the rules and in keeping members happy. Essentially though, that thread culminated to a point it got too aggressive for Mayberry. At the same time, those mods did not want more 'OT' type threads in Mayberry, so closed down Konsters thread based on the replies within. A bit confusing, but the effort was there to try and appease a group of members all the same, ironically the very ones upset about things.

Nobody is trying to follow around the OT guys and pick on them. In fact it's almost the reverse in that a lot of effort is being made to try and find a means to keep those guys happy in the absence of the OT. Case in point, you came into this support forum saying "are we just deleting threads with OT guys in them." What you didn't note is that the thread was created at 9am in the morning, and went to 4pm in the afternoon with nearly 250 replies. If we were just closing them down because it's OT regulars, it wouldn't have lasted that long. It's just that the content got to a point we couldn't justify keeping it around any longer, which is something the contributors control.

So again, it's an example of people trying to find a means to work with people from the OT, not ways to alienate them. But if all anyone took out of yesterdays thread was "you just close things down" not looking at how long that thread was up, and what type of conversation went on in there in relation to the Mayberry rules, etc, to cause it to close down, then there's not much we can do to sway your mind of the opinion we're only out to get you.

Your best bet to enjoy yourself within Sherdog is to follow the rules to the best of your ability within the forums you're in and not the forums you used to be in. If you wish to speak in the context like that found in your 'Online Buds' thread, then discover that conversation at your other forum. This will represent the best means of success to pass your time online and not get upset. Trying to speak and post as you once did within OT will ultimately always find ways to cause an issue here at this point, even if some of your conversation is allowed for a duration then suddenly not. It's not about double standards, it's not about picking on anyone. It's about everyone trying to find a means to contribute and be allowed to contribute within the rules at present day and not yesterday.

It might come to a point you discover that the Sherdog Forums just aren't for you. Contrary to popular perception, we want everyone to stay. Having said that, there are rules that need to be adhered and we need the cooperation of the members to abide by them. We are trying to provide a solid atmosphere for everyone to enjoy, and have exercised much leniency for the benefit of OT style posters to adjust within these confines without the OT style behaviour. Some have transitioned well in spite of not liking the OT removal. They understand all the same and have moved on and are participating just fine. Others though are finding it difficult to enjoy themselves without the OT forums, and are seemingly spending more time looking for problems and complaints than they are just enjoying the community.

In the end, the Mayberry rules are the ones you need to abide (or whichever forum you're in), and if you cannot adjust nor enjoy posting within the rules as outlined, then you need to make a decision in regards to where you wish to post. There's no reason you cannot post within Sherdog and the rules as written, as well as spend time in your other forum for the more aggressive and off topic style. But they need to be separated and the contributors need to understand that. If all they're going to do is come here and look for problems, they need to maybe step back and self assess what they're wanting out of a forum to pass their time.

Anyway, I hope this helps cover some insight. I understand it was a long reply and for that I apologize, but we need to get folks to stop complaining about anything and everything and thinking everyone is out to get them. There will always be problems if you look hard enough. On the flip side, there's a lot to enjoy within Sherdog's forums if you actually log in with the intent to enjoy yourself. Thats a decision everyone needs to make for themselves however.

We're all just people behind these keyboards. Different personalities, different interpretations, all just trying our best. Nobody will ever fully agree and opinions will always lean in favour of how the individual wants outcomes interpreted, but such is life.

There's a spot for you here, as with all, but it has to be within parameters. Enjoy yourself and things will be good.

Thanks for posting, and doing so in the correct forum. That is greatly appreciated.

I see Gay Jesus in the clouds!

Riveting stuff, but we need room for your other gems, like this.

Hello all, this is Happy Thoughts. I tried contacting [email protected] a few months back with no response so this is my only alternative. I was banned for being a previous troll. Is this true? Absolutely. I was lonely in life so I irritated certain people on these forums to get a response. i craved attention because I was not getting any attention in real life. I apologize. I made the account Happy Thoughts to rectify my poor decisions in the past. If you look at all my posts on that banned account I never insulted anyone. I tried to give positive feedback to everyone. I mentioned "Huge if True" on the Las Vegas local news because I love this place and I miss it. Could I have pretended this account was not me with this IP address? Yes, but I really want that account back and honesty is the best policy. I urge all the moderators to review my case and come to a conclusion. If you want me gone, I will be gone. Thanks.

I was going for subtle Tach.

That was me being subtle

I left out all the really good stuff for later

look Im sorry I flipped out I like you guys but you need some kind of judicial review on bans, some mods ban people for vendettas and no reason I wasnt even able to argue my ban because the email to drunk fist didnt work, on other mma forums the review systems are a lot bettter
