Movie has little things that give it depth. The reference Poncho makes to the team serving in Afghanistan, Mac and Blaine fighting the VC and being the last standing which Mac references before he kills the pig.

Lots of good stuff in there, characters had personality and uniqueness across the board.
Yeah this is actually deeper than it seems
Nowadays it seems like red shirts are shallow, but here I thought that a fee would have made it given the depth

I would say this is actually a lot of the reason "80's style action" can't be done very effectively today most of the time(with a few exceptions like Fury Road).

What made a lot of films like Predator, Robocop, Aliens, Total Recall, the Road Warrior etc successful was I'd say that at the core you had stories of depth told from an action medium, a lot of the directors involved clearly had significant ambition to their work.

Nowadays though pretty much the reverse is true, you have films that are ultimately empty formula that try and disguise it by throwing equally empty politics at the audience. Do JJ Abrams films really have anything to say in terms of character or politics? I wouldn't say so.

This all day long!! Instead of making a fun and compelling movie, they take something, redo it or just make it from a formula. Then since it lacks any real depth or anything of interest, they add in SJW social issues and think it's OK. It's like softcore pron for super liberals.
It's really sad, and I feel that it's a lot of committee nonsense that makes this happen. Instead of giving someone talented free reign, they are restricted and it shows in the outcome.

You look back at the 80's films and actually they are very political, the idea of "Reagan actioners" never made much sense to me as the big action blockbusters of that era were generally very negative of that kind of US establishment view. I mean Running Man has the US as a capitalist fascist state that controls the population from violent TV which Arnie helps to overthrow with a group of desidely left wing looking revolutionary's.

Modern blockbusters generally tend to lack their bite, there not really critical of the current establishment at all and just repeat its largely empty tokenism in place of having anything to say politically.

the predator is a dick.
using advanced weaponry while standing at 8ft tall, weighing 300lbs, using invisibility and thermal vision.
real fair fight/hunt!
the jon jones of the sci-fi world.

It's close to a fair hunt, he only goes for those with weapons, he ain't no damn matador or prize fighter.

And when he finds an opponent worthy of him he goes hand to hand, what's not to like?

Cos im an American, and a man,no other reason. For some reason i paid more attention to the plot then i usually do.

So Dillon doin some recon shit past the border where he aint supposed to be doin shit. His CIA dudes 'chopper gets shot down by the guerillas, and they take the men hostage.

Dillon sends a special forces group of 6 men in to get them, but they all get wasted by the Predator.

Dillon sends Arnolds team in with a cooked up story. They find three of the corpses of the special forces group skinned and hanging from trees.

Arnold asks what about the rest, and Billy says "Theres no signs. They never left here. Hell, its like they just fuckin disappeared"

I never gave much thought to that before, but i started thinkin, well wtf happened to those guys, and it would seem that the Predator doesnt skin guys who actually take the fight to him in some kinda way. In Predator 2,king willie didnt run from death,he held his ground. Predator took his skull. The rest of those guys he killed in the penthouse,he skinned and hung them. So im guessing 3 of those guys went down like savages and predator took their skulls.

Later in the movie Predator starts really racking up the kill points. Mac spots the predator in the trees and shows Dillon where he is. Dillon says "Ok ill flush him out towards you and you nail him" and then dillon goes for his outflanking move. We all know the Predator has thermal vision, and probably saw them the whole time. No one in the movie ever figures this out really,so those two guys are doomed from the start. The predator just goes and kills Mac as soon as Dillon seperates from him,and then kills Dillon. Billy stands his ground and gets killed, and then pred shoots poncho in the head, and this is where Arnie jumps off the mountain into the water.

We all know Arnie gets covered in mud and pred cant see him. Watching this again,i realize when the Pred realizes he cant find him,he goes back up the mountain and retrieves the bodies of the slain and takes the trophies he wants. They show him taking Billys skull. Its pretty creepy to think about him going back up there to collect the trophies. Movies like this seem simple enough but back then the details put into even a movie like this is 10000 times better than any shit from today.

Watch this movie right now. The fuck.

When Men were Men

About an hour into this Stone Cold podcast appearance, Jesse Ventura talks about filming Predator. It's pretty cool.

Ok..i like key and peele and all but why the fuck is he in this movie,as a marine? Is this what weve come to in 2018? Instead of badass on badass crime we are forcefed ironic shit like this?

I also think its a huge huge mistake to make some genetically modified super predators to take the shine off what we actually pay to see.

The kid i didnt see in the trailer but i know theres sposed to be one. Its like their trying to make Jurassic park w predators, which i dont find appealing. The Predator itself, tho,i must admit looks terrific.

even when he decides to go hand-to-hand he's still too powerful. he's really only doing it to make himself look like he's giving his victims/prey a chance and to tell his bros back home that he took them out without weapons. still not a fair fight. it's like mighty mouse having to fight a legit HW. and he probably eyepokes all the time too.

He brings out the best in the guys hes fighting. Yeah its hard mode, but they become better fighters for having triumphed over him. Im getting misty eyed and swelling w pride just thinking about it.
The Predator needs us,but...we also need the Predator.

I've always wondered why he didn't deem Billy worthy enough. He sliced open his own goddamn chest!

Supposedly, in very early cuts of the film they had a now deleted scene called Billy's Last Stand where the predator accepts his challenge for melee combat. This ends with Billy being "filleted" in particularly gruesome fashion.
