He knocked out both K1 Demian Maia and Woodley.
MW wasnt really that good by that time
I really didnt say he wasnt good. But I believe its a fact that when Anderson was the Champion, the only fights that people gave a fuck in MW was Anderson's.
always respect Nate for the crazy amount of control/awareness to not throw a follow up shot to Maia. maybe it was because he didn't want to hit the back of the head, or he just knew it was over. either way it was cool to see thatWhen Marquardt was on form he was an absolute beast.
No one ever beat Woodley down like this.

He hit Maia with an atomic bomb of a right hand.

And this might be the greatest combo we've ever seen in the Octagon.

He is the first person to KO Maia, and Woodley. He has wins over Kampmann, Palhares, Horn, and many other good fighters. He was okay. Not elite but good
Judging by his best wins...Gouveia, Maia, Palhares, Woodley...he was definitely elite.
Losing to Anderson Silva is nothing to be ashamed of.
But his losses to Sonnen and Saffedine were not pretty.

Marquardt was definitely elite.

He dropped to WW and became champion right away. Epic KO over Woodley no less.
Beat Misaki, Maia, Palhares or Kampann who all went to be top ranked at WW too.
Marquardt himself didnt walk around heavier than many 170lbers today.
I agree WW was deeper; Marquardt would not get as many tittle eliminators as he did at 185 most likely, but he was certainly capable of making a run to the tittle shot at WW as well.
Nate was top three for a short amount of time. The division wasn’t great though. Couldn’t tell you the exact timeline but he had a decent shot at beating Anderson despite how that turned out.
You are 100% correct. Personally, I favored Nate, but Chael was on a roll, so I expected a great fight.Maybe Saffedine but Chael? Chael steamrolled Okami and then Nate and almost Anderson Silva. There's no shame in losing to Chael at Sonnens best.
BeastHad a bit of hype for him coming into the UFC, Pancrase champ, a few good wins, the hiting Almeida after the bell + Renzo stomping at him after were probably what he was best known for. He also had competed at ADCC and showed some pretty competent grappling. His debut vs Salaverry was a hell of a stinker, and his road to his title shot against Anderson was similarly underwhelming. Still at the time many said he would be the man to beat Anderson Silva, with Anderson's losses to Takase and Chonan still fresh in people's minds many thought Marquardt would grapplefuck Anderson especially after Lutter mounted Andy in the previous fight. Anderson took him to school and after that Nate came out guns a blazin for the rest of his career.
His fight with Leites he got deducted i think two points for fouls, and gave up some bad positions but man I remember thinking at the end of that fight that Marquardt sure did beat the shit out of him even though he lost. Got held down by good wrestlers in Okami and Chael and I think he pissed hot a couple of times along the line and was right on TRT as soon as it was a thing. When he seemed unable to keep the top wrestlers at 185 off of him he dropped to 170 and looked to be making a good career resurgence when he beat Twood but it looked like his best days were behind him after that.
When TRT went away it seemed pretty clear he was never going to be good again. Last few years he's been pretty hard to watch, should have definitely retired early but man in his prime he was a good well rounded fighter and gave some of the most violent performances in UFC history, at his peak he was a top 5 guy.
WAR MARQUARDT
