Yes it had a significant contributing factor, but do you think there was more to it?

I would think there was onset of severe depression after finding out about that diagnosis.

That's just my take on it.

No, his cause of death was asphyxiation. The lewy body dementia definitely was a contributor in his choice to commit suicide but he also had a long histore of mental health and substance issues.

Yeah that make sense, thanks.

I do believe he hanged himself.

But it is likely he did that due to either the effects of it he was already feeling, or being informed of the diagnosis and being aware of what was in store for him as it progressed. I'm not sure how far along the disease had progressed when he died.
Chances are he noticed himself changing and falling apart and still had the ability to take his own life.

He may have already had a depression diagnosis as well.

I know my mother's whole personality changed and she wanted to suicide (totally against her character normally) many times but by the time she reached that state of mind she was not capable (physically or mentally).

I'd speculate he had been having a horrible time, got diagnosed and advised of what he was likely going to experience and said 'fuck this!' And took his own life, of which I fully understand.

You have very valid explanation of how it came down. I agree with pretty much everything you said.

I think Robin Williams got scared that he can't control his thoughts / losing his memory or his physical abilities anymore. He's known for being in control with very sharp wit and when he started losing his major abilities that made him revered. He probably thought, what's the point of living.

I've heard that before, that Parkinsons, Lewy body dementia has a higher suicide rate. It might be the condition that brings that about. Possibly the medications prescribed bring about greater thoughts of suicide.

Having experienced dementia take multiple family members from me. Robin did the right thing--I just hope I'm brave enough to do the same if it comes for me.

Williams was always open about his battles with depression and suicidal thoughts long before he was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. The seeds were there and when this disease took over his life, it was enough to push him to do it. His wife gave an interview where she went into the specifics of Williams' final few years as the disease progressed. It's really sad what he went through. You lose spacial awareness and you wind up walking into walls when you thought you were walking through a door. Couldn't remember his lines or people's names. It sounded horrible.

Robin said his mind was never the same after doing coke every day for 5 years.
Wow I hadn't heard that. Such a beloved person without anyone near to him who both told him he shouldn't do that and was respected by him enough to get him to listen. It's so sad.

In a way it's like he was living alone during those 5 years. McGregor appears to be following in his wake both in habit of choice and solitude in the level of usage.

He was doing it in the 70s/80s and I think it was Robin who was partying with John Belushi hours before he overdosed.
