Was Butterbean Legit?

He was as legit as anyone who was as dedicated to MMA as he was. I don't think any fighter would want to be on the receiving end of one of his punches. He always had the proverbial "punchers chance." His conditioning, lack of grappling acumen, weight, age, all worked against him.

I was saddened that he was not allowed to fight Mark Hunt at PRIDE's Real Deal in 2006. I guess the NSAC didn't feel he was a worthy opponent for the 'Super Samoan.'

This sums it up to me. As legit as anyone could be in that situation.

Ask Bart Gunn

lol, that KO was so fuckin brutal. I remember being so excited for that fight. I thought Bart Gunn actually stood a chance.

He had some decent power. Really powerful punches. His bread and butter was boxing. He should have stuck to that.

You gotta respect a guy with his physique who can make a career with almost a hundred victories between boxing, kickboxing and MMA against only two dozen defeats! Even won a couple of championships belts. Dude way overachieved.

I'm amazed at how fast and how much stamina he has when he's like 5'9 and 400lbs.

Almost 15 years later, I still find myself occasionally asking out loud, "WHY DIDN'T BART GO FOR THE TAKEDOWN!!??!?!?!"

Always been a fan his body type just made for so many interesting fights

Probably because he didn't understand the stupid Brawl for All rules.

Poor Bart Gunn. His career died that night.
Its been said this match at Wrestlemania was massive punishment for him defeating Steve Williams via knockout in their second round match. Vince and company were going to push Steve hard as fuck but Bart Gunn fucked those plans up. What did they expect by putting on a legitimate tournament that wasn't scripted lol

I've read the exact same thing.

Butterbean offered to throw the fight but Vince insisted on a shoot. Poor Bart.

I loved watching Butterbean box as a kid lol. His right hand was as legit as it gets

with such a thunderous punch, it's weird to see that most of his wins were by submission lol. despite having so many wins, i am really not sure you can call him legit (in mma). cabbage and JT are decent wins i guess but other than that, almost everyone else he picked up a win against was either an amateur or someone with a big losing record. he had finishing ability but never really put himself into any great challenges that could've really tested his legitimacy

anyone know where Butterbean got his nickname from?

wikipedia has an entry saying:

He received the nickname "Butterbean" when he was forced to go on a diet (consisting mostly of chicken and butterbeans) in order to meet the Toughman 181 kilogram/400 pound weight limit
