Was Butterbean Legit?

Butterbean was my favorite boxer as a kid. I remember staying up late to watch his fights with my dad.

Going over his MMA record, I was kind of surprised to see that he 's submitted to strikes 6 times in his career.

Would you have wanted to get cracked by that right hand? lol

His hands were deceptively fast and hit harder than almost anyone. I think that Larry Holmes fight is the highlight of his fighting career in that he didn't get completely destroyed. In MMA the formula for beating him is obvious...However if you for some unknown reason want to strike with that guy in those gloves and a skull and neck like that, he's going to win more often than not against anybody that doesn't kick him to death at range........so super one demensional.....but I say legit.

In most cases, once 'Bean is off his feet, he legit can't get back up or improve position so he doesn't have much choice but to tap from strikes rather than waiting for the ref to step in.

It's not like MMA fighters are working him in the standup.

Bean would KTFO Shaub and Mir

lol, in a boxing match. Both would take bean down within seconds and do whatever they wanted on the ground. I think he would have a decent chance against pat barry though.

Mir would probably tap him with a wristlock in the first few seconds, but I'm not sure Brendan can shut Bean down. I think it would look a lot like the Rothwell fight.

For all the critics of Butterbean, I thought he looked very respectable against Larry Holmes in Holmes last fight. It went the whole 12 rounds, Butterbean showed a decent gas tank, and was winging hard punches the whole time.

Ummm, you know Holmes was 52 at the time, right?

Larry literally stepped right out of his coffin and into the ring for that fight.

I, for one, was sad that the much hyped match between Bean and Tank Abbott never came off a few years back. I think that would have had the potential for a huge slugfest with two of the hardest hitting brawlers around.

Holmes fought very well late in his career, check out the Mercer fight when Larry was a young 42, awesome!

Bean would've been a can by any other division's standard but HW was ridiculously shallow back then.

Legit due to the fact that he actually had one skillset of note.

Had he been 20 years younger and just as solid he would've been a gatekeeper at least as his power and stockiness would prove hard to handle for both strikers and grapplers.
