warning signs of cauliflower ear?

If you don't drain it right away it'll calcify and then you're basically screwed..

IF your ears are just sore after training you probably want to baby it for a week or two (roll lightly so it doesn't take impact) then get decent wrestling ear guards until it's no longer injured.

Now in years of serious daily training I've never really had my ears get too sore and I've never had a tear, so I've luckily not come close to getting cauliflower ear. Hopefully my ears are just too godlike to get it :)

But that is good advice from very reliable people.

if i've pulled my head out of a few guillotines in class, my ear feels hot and aches when touched, and then when the swelling goes down the ear doesn't shrink back to the size it was, but gets a bit thicker. ice helps pain n swelling tho.

how do you drain it?
something you can do yourself or do you need to see a doctor?

I guess you could do it yourself, if you want it to get infected. The doctor should drain it with a syringe.

I've had the same kind of redness, tenderness, etc. It's pretty hard to avoid unless you're willing to tap everytime somebody starts a headlock or you have skills (better than mine) to get people to release the headlock without pulling out.

I'm far from an expert but I don't think the tender but "no fluid" ears are cauliflower. I wear Asics Gel headgear. They do a great job of protecting my ears. I'd go so far as to say they are completely out of harms way. On the downside, I feel a bit hotter when wearing them and the chin strap confines my breathing slightly. Also, I can't always hear the 5 minute timer that we use to signify the start and end of rolling sessions. I've spoken to some of the more experienced wrestlers in my class and they said all of the that was pretty normal. It's not an exteme problem but if it wasn't for tender ears I'd roll without them.

I'm lucky. I played rugby(second row, no head gear) for 5 years and then started grappling 3.5 years ago and haven't had the slightest hint of caulis.

When people are afraid to make eye contact with you, you might have a problem.

Some people just have ears that are more susceptible to cauliflower ear. I use asics headgear and they work great. Be aware, some fellow students may play dirty and pull on them. Pay back's a bitch though!
