There was a great paper on the development of industrial-literary consciousness, I wish I could find it now. Basically, thinking in abstractions and words is frankly, very weird to people who haven't been soaked in it from birth.

Yeah, Henrich gets into that in WEIRD. Universal literacy had a profound effect on the psychology, making us more analytical for example. Our brains are actually shrinking (probably because each individual needs less knowledge and fewer skills, and big brains are expensive) even as we're getting collectively smarter and our intelligence is more suited to the society we live in (reflected in rising IQs, for example).

I have a paper saved somewhere where a group of researchers try to teach some Inuit population modus ponens and they're like.. nah.

So either Socrates was full of shit or we're all drawing our memories from different places (or some better than others).
