War Room OT Discussion

I'd be down. I played a fair amount of CKII, EU whatever, and some non-paradox strategy games in school.

This shit could be real lit. I'm debating on bringing it up en masse to gauge how receptive people are. War Room game night could be good times, stream it on twitch or something.

I'd be down with Settlers of Catan online for some of you guys. Low requirements, easy to learn, and I think the negotiation element would be interesting with relations as they are in the War Room.

LOL, I was messing around of course. I'm pretty surprised that this one is low key considering the crowd. Although look who you're talking to here, considering I post in and mod the OT, it'd take a lot for me to be surprised by anything anyone says around here.

As weird as it is, I always thought it to be like "TehTeh"

Same guy, yeah. Interest in boxing dropped off some years ago.
Any particular reason?

BTW this same question can apply to any WR regular who doesn't watch MMA or Boxing anymore. I honestly can't remember the last MMA fight I watched. Last Boxing was Kovalev vs Ward.

For me it was the UFC bloating its roster with KOTC level fighters and putting on way too many cards. These days if you're watching all the UFC cards I have to question what you do with your life. Take it from someone who not only watched every UFC card that was out but also any other competitor (which is lacking these days and which is probably why UFC declined in quality) such as PRIDE, Strikeforce, Dream, etc and some smaller fight cards

Now I couldn't bring myself back to it. It was like a habit and once I broke it I never went back to it.

I don't really post about mma anymore but I definitely still follow it. There are way more events so it's hard to be on top of everything now but I think I still generally know a decent amount but that's compared to anyone I've met in real life. No one else likes it other than my brother and I definitely like it more.

Yeah, I pretty much stopped posting about MMA, as I just got bored with the same arguments and the same idiotic comments. Didn't feel like I was learning anything in the HWs. But I still watch every PPV and at least the main events on non-PPV cards and go live when I can.

BTW, speaking of the bloated roster, @Gandhi, can you tell us anything about this Olivier Aubin-Mercier? I was pretty damned impressed with him on Saturday. Some nice clean angles standing and impressive ground work. His opponent was not good so it's hard to know how much to take from it based on that.

You mean to tell me you don't like talking about Ronda, Conor and this "Platinum" Mike Perry?

BTW, who the fuck is Mike Perry?

I actually looked at the HWs to see what you're talking about, and holy fuck, you're right. I remember him from 202--looked like a pretty interesting prospect, but it seems like half the threads in the HWs are about him.

It's the same thing I felt with Conor. A new prospect having his balls sucked by the entire forum.

I know you and I have talked about it once before, and yes Conor has proven legit, but it's the same thing with Sage and Page and a bunch of others. Once these new age UFC hype trains hit, the forum gobbles it up. Atleast give them time before sucking the teet that much.

My thoughts on the Lim fight were that his footwork was very basic (probably the most important thing to look at in terms of striking), he didn't show much on the ground but looked competent, and he was very hittable, but had big power. Young and already fighting at a high level, which is a great marker. I think it's possible that he'll become a contender, but at the moment I don't see a lot to be excited about (didn't see his most recent fight, though--surprising that he's already fought once since 202). But, yeah, I'd say that if he turns out to be a star, people already on the hype train will look pretty good (that was the point I made with regard to McGregor, right?).

Yeah, I mean with MMA it's always weird. Anyone can lose at any given moment, against the right opponent. Conor losing to a mediocre LW/WW, but then beating Eddie Alvarez with ease.

This Perry guy, has heavy hands, but, not much experience and hasn't faced anyone above prelim status.

I like prospects and it's fun to watch them grow/advance, but damn if the heavies don't kill it for me sometimes. @TheStruggle of being an MMA fan and a Sherbro is real.

Like I said, I've pretty much abandoned the HWs entirely. Does Bektic have a similar hype train? That would seem justified.

The Perry hype is similar to the early McGregor hype in that half of the people you are looking at are joking. The McGregor 'GOAT' thing, and the Perry thing are both internet jokes that contain some truth, but also a lot of people just along for the ride because it's a kind of meme.

That said, Perry does not show any of the poise or fluidity that Conor did, there was really something special there with Conor that you could see early. With Perry, there is something there too, but it's very different: heart, grit, passion. My own opinion, he's never going to be close to champion, but his fights will always be fun to watch. He gets hit way too much, and though he hits hard himself, that style never rises to the top. He is a blood & guts fighter.

That's what I view it as, just a meme. The problem is it catches on and just about fucking everyone is sucking the balls of said meme, to the point of accounts being made just for them. And if you disagree, you're a .... hater? :P

Conor is great, but not perfect, clearly. I mean, how special can a guy be if he gets out boxed and sub'ed in the 2nd round by 19-10 Nate Diaz?

Perry...I'll wait and see. But you're a heavies mod. Do you acknowledge the insanity that goes on over there? A small joke turns into a meme, and then all of a sudden the whole section is intolerable.

I have a particularly rare perspective on the Perry thing I think, because I watched his minor league fights, and was in anticipation of his UFC debut on the prelims. I knew of his insane nightclub dudebro personality, but I enjoy characters in MMA, always have, so I welcomed his doucheiness as fun. I even nicknamed him Baroni 2.0 before it was cool. Granted... it's not cool, lol... I get what you're saying. It was funny watching it take off, it was actually the next fight where it really took over, and since then I don't even bother partaking in those discussions, it's all silly.

Ah come on, I expect a boxing guy to have that perspective, not an MMA guy. Records in MMA can be deceptive as hell, Nate is an elite fighter. The bottom line is, you don't do what Conor did to Eddie & Aldo etc., without being a goddamn wizard of a fighter.

Yeah, I have always had the ability to just not get caught up in that kinda thing, and just scroll past it. Whether it's a bunch of dumb jokes, or people angry about this or that fighter, or even someone attacking me specifically on here, I don't feel the need to respond, partake, but also don't feel the intolerable part. I just look for the next post, or the next thread, that I do want to partake in. That's why I still love the heavies after all these years, there are lots of good conversations about MMA to be had there. You just have to reach past the bruised fruit.

That was partially my point. Nate *is* an elite fighter, at 20-11. I love MMA, but I also know that it's impossible to compare elite boxers with elite MMA fighters, or the old school with the new. The days of Fedor, GSP and Anderson seem like a distant memory, going years upon years without losing. I got burned before, I won't let it happen again :P

Ahh, it's okay. You just have to let fighters losing, not be such a big deal. 'The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat' ... Yeah, but it's not to the death. It's just a contest. The stakes are purses. Pretty much everybody walks away to play another day. *knocks on wood...*
