I like Cruz at the current odds, though not by much. Made a small bet on him already and will be watching for more.

Agreed, though Cruz switches stance in range sometimes, and that's asking to get dropped by Garbrandt. I think Garbrandt will do OK early, and then his lack of pacing will start to hurt him later. I thought his footwork started declining noticeably later in the Brimage fight. BTW, I was at that one and stayed at the MGM. On my way to the arena, I was in an elevator with this dude that asked if we were going to see the event. He told us to watch out for Garbrandt, that he went to HS with him and has been following his career closely and that he (Cody) was a beast who was going to make a big splash in the UFC.

I've been waiting for Cruz to get KO'd by an uppercut or high-kick for repeatedly ducking to the side as part of his footwork, but it never came. Of course Cody could KO him as a result of Cruz' unique movement, including his constant switching, but this movement is also, in part, why he's a successful fighter to begin with. I think you're right that his success will come early, then he'll get picked apart and get desperate. Cody does a lot of standing in front of his opponent, flat-footed, which won't do him any favours here.

Who do you guys have the Garbrandt v Cruz matchup?

I won't bet on it because I think Cruz is the right pick but really believe Garbrandt can win it. The odds aren't worth it to me for either guy except maybe Garvbrandt but it's still not enough

I'm with you guys, that type of switching in striking range would get many fighters dropped (it's a fundamental mistake from textbook striking). The thing with Cruz is he is so awkward and unorthodox that he ends up being very hard to time. I think it's somewhat of a long shot that Garbrandt catches him.

Yeah, as I mentioned, I like Cruz even at the odds, and he could make Garbrandt look bad, but Cody does have a shot and that's what it is, I think.

So I haven't been to the gym in maybe two months. Went yesterday and realized something is really fucked up with my right shoulder/arm. It can't even do half the weight my other side can do and on something, it's completely worthless. I'm surprised I hadn't noticed this outside of the gym. I barely could curl 10lbs with that arm. Unsure how I could've injured it that bad and not have any memory of doing so.

Been there. Depressed the hell out of me. If you're a young man, get it looked at asap. If you're old like me, it may be time to face the reality of your fleeting youth.

I'm 26 and I've kept in good shape until the last year I focused more on just cardio and BJJ and stopped with weights. Now, I realize I should still do it cause the extra muscle kinda keeps you durable and I was thinning out. It definitely was depressing. I literally couldn't lift 10lbs more than twice with that arm. What happened with you? Did you get it checked? My brother does physical therapy and said he'd look at it. Said it might be bicep tendinitis. Not really sure how bad that can be and how fast it takes to recover. Again though, very depressing.

When I was 26 I hurt my shoulder flat benching without warming up. I didn't bother getting it checked out and it still bothers me when I do certain movements. I went to physio many years after the incident and the guy basically told me I was an idiot for not getting it properly examined immediately. I switched over from flat to incline, and I found it didn't bother my shoulder, but then I blew out the other one. Suffice it to say I'm a shell of my former self. You're still young that you should rehab it properly to make sure it doesn't become chronic.

I think Garbrandt's level of competition matters too. Not that he's only beaten cans or anything but he's never squared off with a top caliber fighter. Garbrandt has a nice future and he's fun to watch (power at that weight class is pretty hard to come by) but I think he's too much of a plodder to catch Cruz this go around, but hey, funny things happen in MMA almost every card.

Sure. Garbrandt is taking a huge step up and he'll likely get tooled. I don't disagree with you on anything here (except possibly about Almeida being "top caliber"--depends how you define that, but he's damned good, IMO).

I think Cruz's odd movement serves him well generally, and he knows what he's doing, but I think that just because he's gotten away with it so far doesn't mean there's no risk in it (and note that he has been dropped mid-switch before). I also don't quite get his stamina--like he often seems winded early looking at his face and breathing, but he maintains his pace all the way. Weird fighter for me, and not someone I think I have a good handle on. But the results speak for themselves, and great defensive fighters often make guys whose game is built around planting and loading up on power shots look silly. And particularly, a guy who puts a lot into almost every strike and has only three times gone past the first is not a good bet to do well deeper into a fight with a guy who makes him miss a lot.

My brother actually said my bench form probably helped screw it up. I keep my elbows out and the bar between my chest and shoulder which is farther up than you should normally do. I tried to adjust my form later on but it never stuck. I'll definitely get it looked at soon. I want to start my lifts again and I won't be able to if this isn't fixed

Word to the wise, don't do flat bench, do incline instead. Your numbers will drop some, so it may be discouraging at first, but I've been told that it's the better exercise that is less injury-prone.

I always did incline and decline as well. Incline you definitely lose weight on but it's a different part of your chest I thought. I actually think my problem is I've been targeting the muscle with my flat bench that should be getting hit from doing incline. Either way, some things need to change

Doing any exercise with proper form is not difficult, it's just that we don't want to lose our numbers to perfect it. After my injury on flat and my subsequent talk with some power lifters, I'm convinced flat bench is dangerous for all it's worth. Dumbell incline is where it's at.

who dropped him while he was switching?

Faber in their second fight (3:05 roughly of the first round).

I remembered it, but when you asked, I looked it up, and saw that Fightmetric reported a 0% KD rate for Cruz so I was wondering if I misremembered. Checked out the fight on Fight Pass, and there it is. Not a consequential one, certainly, but he was squared up and got hit and went down very briefly.

Did FM consider it a slip?

i can see why Cruz is the odds on favorite but i have to go with Cody on this one. Cruz's MO is unpredictable, evasive movements so it is super hard to get a read on him and react -- but Cody's power is something Cruz has not faced and his hands down, awkward stances makes him that much vulnerable to damage if a punch does connect.

Cody is also a fanatic boxer who has a impressive amatuer background and really solid kicks and footwork.

Cody 2nd rd KO.
