It's a strange situation. I remember when McGwire broke Roger Maris's record. Maris's family was prominent during this and I think in the stands when he McGwire broke the record. And McGwire motioned to his family and talked about Maris. He was respectful.

That would have been a thing to witness. Mantle and Maris going after Ruth's record. Same thing with Dimagggio's hit streak. Everyday you would look to see if Joe got a hit or Maris or Mantle hit one out. Ted Williams going 400 is legendary too. He could have quit. Not taken the at bats and stopped at 400. But he took them and ended up higher.

After the game, Ted said he’d never felt nervous in baseball before. Now, he said, “I was shaking like a leaf when I went to bat the first time. Then when I got that first hit, I was all set. I felt good. Gee, there’s a lot of luck making that many hits.” He turned to Jimmie Foxx and exclaimed, “Just think–hitting .400. What do you think of that, Slug? Just a kid like me hitting that high.”

hate to date myself here, but as a kid I saw both Maris and Mantle play back east.
I don't think I fully appreciated it, but I remember going to the old 'wooden' yankee stadium with my
Dad and gramps.

Meh. Rocky fought a lot of bums on the way up. His 35th fight was against a guy who entered the ring 11-14-2 and was certainly way worse than McGregor. Overall, there's no question at all which of the two faced better competition. Anyway, the record is meaningless. Retiring before you get washed up isn't a real mark of greatness as a fighter.

Mayweather's first professional opponent had a record of 0-0 when they fought. Should that one also not count?

I posted to the HWs for seven years before I ever appeared in the WR. Bet on most events, though usually pretty small (under $100), unless I see some real opportunity. OK, my dad considered martial arts training (mostly boxing) to be part of a gentleman's education, and I've trained in various disciplines almost my whole life (off and on). Always been a fan. I think fighting sports are a great example of what it means to be civilized--being propelled by passion but not steered by it. In a situation where a barbarian would flail or flee, training enables people to calmly make rational decisions. It definitely attracts a rough element, but I think if more sophisticated types looked past that and gave it a chance, a lot of them would develop a deep appreciation for it. And the betting is key, too. I do it not to make money but to get rewarded or punished for being right or wrong. It's a purely intellectual thrill.
