Ichiro and his 51 is pretty well known. I know he wore 31 when he was a Yankee because of the numbers link to I think Bernie Williams and he didn't want to rock the boat to get 51.

Way to many more iconic baseball players for Ichiro to be in the conversations imo.

Just for the Mariners I'd have him behind Griffey, Randy Johnson, and A-Rod

Yeah, just for the number (51), I had considered having Randy Johnson. But Randy Johnson was just iconic in general on account of him being a lanky 6'10 and having a mullet and a bird's beak.

It's hard to comment on Dimaggio without actually having lived in that era.

Lebron James, though? Seems like quite the cultural icon. If we're going back to the past, I'd say you're leaving out some very prominent NFL players as well, like Joe Montana.

Baseball was the biggest most popular sport for a long time.

Basketball and Football started to catchup in the 90s. Jordan obviously had a lot to do with getting Basketball up there.

DiMaggio's profile was helped by playing in NY (like many others). He also married Marylin Monroe when she was the most famous woman in the world.

Joey D was bigger name than Ted Williams even though I think Ted was the superior slugger

Deion Sanders should probably be on the list. As much as I hate Primetime he was an absolute super star

See, James is probably the biggest current team-sport star (him or Brady), but he just doesn't have that kind of cultural impact because there are lots of sports and lots of other entertainment options. He doesn't seem even close to being as big as DiMaggio. Woods, yes. I don't think Montana either.

He also exploded a bird on TV lol

The hegemony of baseball (and its duration) is consistently overestimated. It was passed up by football by the first Super Bowl in 1967. By the 1990s, football had long passed it up.

Disagree on Lebron.

They teased his free agency decision for a month with a live broadcast of The Decision

ESPN hired Brian Windhorst from a small local paper just to cover him full time because he followed him in HS.

He had hilarious iconic commercials like The Lebron's and is now rebooting SpaceJam.

And if we look outside of the US he is huge in China

Can I use it to go buy this:

Or this?

Or this?

Oh? Major financial institutions like Citi, Chase, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs don't accept crypto? Then it's worthless.

Williams was unquestionably the better hitter and probably better overall player because of that (by fWAR, Williams' five best seasons were better than any of DiMaggio's), but, yeah, DiMaggio was the bigger star. Even won a couple of undeserved MVP awards over Williams. Williams was vulgar, while DiMaggio was all class. The Yankees were consistently better. Plus NYC is the media capital. They both had really graceful swings. But DiMaggio was graceful in the field and on the basepaths, and had mystique.

BTW, here's Williams' swing:

Just for the Mariners I'd have him behind Griffey, Randy Johnson, and A-Rod
You fail for naming Mariners by not listing this man:

For me growing up out there, iconic Mariners:
- Griffey
- Big Unit
- Edgar
- A-Roid
- Ichiro
- King Felix

Guys that were damn good and helped the team:
- Buhner with his pine tar hip
- Olerud
- Dan Wilson
- Jamie Moyer

Good God, look at all the wasted talent that team has had.

I've been hearing how bitcoin is due to blow up since like 2010 at least and it's done fooking nothin'

Interesting.

But I'm not sure if you can go by that metric alone when one sport has 162 game regular season and 7 game playoff series vs 14-16 games and 1 and done playoffs.

I'll always have a soft spot for Jamie Moyer

The Mariners... I have a real REAL love/hate relationship with that team. Equal parts of me wants them to do well while also wanting them to get sold off and sent to like Montreal.

Greg, stop trying to make YouTube videos happen. It's not going to happen.

But, yeah, baseball is boring as shit. Its popularity only persisted for so long because there weren't entertainment alternatives, and baseball just slightly beats out staring at a wall. The Cubs circa 2003 was the only club I remotely enjoyed watching.

Yeah...those aren't "Mainstream media", derptron.

Crypto fanatics are worse than *nix cultists, and they had a 30 year head start.
