If you saw me drinking orange juice, would you say that I have taken up the task of drinking all the orange juice? I'd say that I drink something--including sometimes orange juice--when I'm thirsty. And I express disagreement with poor arguments--including sometimes about "the left"--when the fancy strikes me.

Surely you agree that it's dishonest to claim that "the left" supports open borders, right? It doesn't require "taking up the task to defend the left" to point that out. The fact that you don't see that suggests that tribalism has warped your brain. You can't even conceive of people just wanting to get things right without having some kind of mission to "defend" something.

1) No, because "the left" is not a well-defined term. We've been over this.

2) Defending "the left" (whatever you think it means) is the same thing as "taking up the task of defending the left". This is a semantic dispute. I changed the oil in my automobile earlier. That is, I "took up the task of changing the oil in my automobile".

You don't have to respond to me. Semantic arguments are a red-flag that you are dealing with a dishonest loon. Instead of trying to frame things as conservative and liberal, maybe you should focus more on what is good and bad, like, "the GOP's policy on ____ is good because____", and then we can have an interesting conversation.

Slightly off topic, this reminds me of the Flat-Earth thread where AbiG was congratulating himself how on smart he was because no one could convince him the earth was round.

In another thread, just now, I pointed out that eliminating poverty in America wouldn't require eliminating large fortunes (as someone else had said) since the total gap between all households in poverty and the poverty line is a small portion of our national income. You wouldn't frame that comment as me "taking up the task of defending the right," though you could by this definition. You have a tendency to do that--make grand, biased pronouncements and then back up to "I just meant something much milder" when called on it. It's not cricket.
