South Carolina and Arizona are pretty big news imo. A week or 2 ago it seemed like Sanford was about to enter the race and it would have been interesting to see how much support he could keep in his home state.

Of everybody that could primary Trump I think he would do the most damage.

It's not clear from the article. They may have canceled the primaries because nobody but the incumbent was running. I don't remember anybody trying to primary Obama, W, Clinton or Reagan

Certainly, I don't want to overstate the case. We have a pretty good shot at riding this out and settling back into a nice quiet status quo complacency about the attitudes of racists, temporarily defanged by overwhelming opposition, until the cycle starts again. But there is a non-zero chance things go way off the rails here too.

For the Canadians here, whether one supports Trudeau or not, I think we can all imagine what might transpire were he to win re-election with a small to slim majority and begin attempting to pass any sort of even remotely controversial bills. Especially if there was even a whiff of "SJW-ness" to more than one of them. He hasn't even finished his first term yet but we're already seeing a backlash or swing of the pendulum if you prefer, on the right in general and the extreme right in particular. I would say it is similar in character to, if for obviously different reasons than, the reaction to the election of Obama.

I know there are exceptions like Ontario but in general, the people no longer seem to believe the government in power at the provincial or federal level has anything to do with the performance of the economy, or pretty nearly so, so that's pretty weird to me. Especially provincially--I'm still baffled by the result of the last election here, but not saying it was a bad thing--the big swing to Conservative winners in recent provincial elections doesn't seem to have had anything whatsoever to do with the economy. It's weird and I don't like it.

Clinton was primaried in 1996, but I think or thought all states held an election. That's what it looks like at least.
