I had an N64 and the game boy variants as cartridge based game systems. I know for certain that blowing into the cartridge was "common knowledge" but I can not recall doing it myself, so hopefully I stayed away from it. Remember one time we were at a beach on Crete when there was a mild sandstorm due to wind, and getting sand into my precious Pokemon Silver cartridge. Had to shake it a lot to get the sand in it, and I could still hear some grinding for a while which scared me. Can't recall any cartridges ever literally giving up on me, though. As for the N64, it was the controllers that gave out. Mario Party gave the sticks a hard run.
What kind of games did you play back then?
On the NES? My favorites were Final Fantasy, the various Marios, and Faxanadu. I got the SNES and then nothing until the Xbox, and nothing since.
