Unlike the last recession (which had the whole debt overhang, financial crisis aspect), I think this one could go away pretty quickly with a good shot of stimulus.

The potential blowback is something to worry about, but ultimately, if we have a booming economy by 2024, I think the political tradeoff is fine, and it's potentially the right thing to do politics aside ("potentially" because it depends on what other options are available, as I can see many other, better options possible but maybe not actually available).

No, I'm talking about forms of stimulus that are totally unrelated to student loans. I'm not looking at forgiving student loans as an end here; getting more money circulating in the economy is the goal. So the possibilities are endless. Just sending out checks to everyone might be the best thing. Aid to state and local gov'ts would be another really good way to get it done. I think student-loan forgiveness would be way down the list if there were no constraints.

I don't think it will surprise you that being a Canadian, I'm in strong agreement with this. There will be pockets of the economy that will need more help and time to recover in the form of extended stimulus, but overall, that strategy has worked very well here and I could even say mission accomplished almost if not for public health measures that were relaxed too quickly or taken for granted in many places which resulted in a big second wave.

As I said before, global disasters are expensive, no way around that. But the best way to deal with it is keep cash flowing though the economy like keeping a pump primed until the power comes back on, and resist any urge whatsoever toward austerity. Just before the pandemic hit, it appeared that nearly all of North America was booming--certainly the local economy was doing record numbers, including several years of steady growth. It doesn't seem to me it should take much to head back in that direction to a significant degree if people aren't allowed to fall too far into the cracks with no cash flow.

It will be interesting to see how much obstruction the American people are willing to put up with from Trump and the Republicans (even after Trump is gone).

@Jack V Savage apropos of the foregoing, I'm predicting it right now: when the vaccine has been widely distributed--let's say this time next year give or take a few months--and other large economies are showing rapid recovery due to these sorts of policies while the US flounders, Senate Republicans will blame the poor economic showing on Biden.
